In case no-one has noticed, the paper part of the driving licence has
gone. You can however see/check yours here:
https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence
and also generate a code that is required for car rental!

This looks like it could cause a lot of hassle with car hire abroad. Our newspaper ran an article this morning suggesting people aren't too hasty to rip their paper counterpart up, as foreign car hire firms may still want to rely on them.

Why would it cause problems abroad? Most of Europe have had paperless licences for years anyway !

Most car hire companies are ONLY interested in the fact that it's valid.

You can imagine the scenario.... busy queue at the hire desk... Car hire rep trying to log in to the DVLA website...the article wasn't saying it Will happen, only that in some circumstances, those car hire companies that insist on checking for endorsements might then ask for the paper version to save time and tick their boxes.

We've just got plastic here in Spain, no paper bit.🙂

I assume Spain has an equivalent to the DVLA that actually works! There are reports this morning that the UK DVLA website crashed yesterday and nobody could access their codes.

A serious point, though, if you're hiring a car, say, for the second week of a holiday, (whether here or abroad) you'll have to generate a code no more than 72 hours beforehand, and you'll need your National Insurance number to do so. Another thing to have to remember to pack!

Had to laugh yesterday as the head of the DVLA said that if you had problems abroad you could always phone the DVLA for help😱

I believe that the code from the DVLA is now valid for 21 days.
