When I woke up today my blood sugar was 12, a little high so I added a few units to my usual insulin. A couple of hours after breakfast it was 11, going down I thought. I didn't test at lunch since I was rushing. I felt a little sluggish but I put it down to not getting much sleep last night. I just tested and it was 24! I have no idea why. I have injected insulin but can't work out why I am so high and am panicking a bit. Can lack of sleep affect blood sugars? I can't test ketones as I am at work and strips are at home.

Are you under pressure at work? Stress and lack of sleep will have an effect on levels Hope you feel better soon.

Could you be coming down with something, or under a lot of stress or something that may have caused your sugars to go up? It's possible that lack of sleep could push them up I guess. Easy to say, but try not to panic too much as that could push you up even more. So long as you're feeling ok in yourself I would try not to stress too much, take whatever correction you would usually and keep an eye on it, maybe drink plenty of water just in case there are ketones and test when you get home?
May also be worth using the test solution on your meter and maybe changing your insulin cartridge but I'm guessing that you can't do that until you get home.
Hope you start feeling better soon!

just a thought, maybe you didn't inject properly if you were tired etc, I've heard that lumps of fat which some of us suffer from around injection site make the insulin less affective, could this have happened??

Is there any chance the boss will let you go home and make the hours up?

I hope you sort it out soon, but try and stay calm.

What did you have for lunch? Stress (even mild stress) pushes my levels higher, as does a lack of sleep. If it was happening to me I'd probably test every hour or so to find out which way things are heading. It's true too that absorbtion can vary - I've had some very speedy ones and the occasional slow one.

Hope you are back on an even keel soon!🙂

Thanks. I hate unexpected high levels. I had a normal lunch, sandwich and a Nakd fruit bar. I think it may have been a combination of things, including lack of sleep and dehydration, when it's hot I tend to get dehydrated and my levels go up. I have just checked and it's 15 so thats good, I corrected and drank some water.

Northerner, where does your signature come from? I like it!

Good to hear that things have improved Lizzie! My sig is a combination of Bill Tidy's 'The Cloggies' (picture) and a quote from ramblin' syd rumpo (aka Kenneth Williams!)

Much as I hate to admit it 😱 , I once managed to fit the Lantus insulin into the Humalog pen and it took a couple of days before I decided the Humalog cartridge must have been duff, before I thought to change it!

I haven't even told my husband that one! 😉

Hope that things have settled down today for you LIzzie, another consideration is that your insulin had become damaged by the recent heat

Thanks sofaraway, things are much better today. And something good has come of it since I will now make an effort to drink more water. Even after 2 days I feel better for drinking more.
