Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello! I'm feeling a bit low at the moment. Type 2 diagnosed around two years ago after a second bout of sarcoidosis. Put on Metformin and Sitagliptin. Two months ago I was rushed to hospital with severe pain. Diagnosed with pancreatitis and put on insulin IV. Stayed in for nine days and now injecting twice daily 42 am and 34 pm and taken off tablets. I'm waiting for gall bladder removal. I've really taken on board carb counting and exercising 3/4 a day. However, I'm not losing any weight! The diabetes team tell me that insulin can cause weight gain and its so disheartening. My blood sugar has gone from 19/20 when I was discharged to around 6/9. I just wondered if anyone has been in a similar situation and come off insulin after the operation. Sorry for the long post

Don't believe them! People on insulin (such as all us who are Type 1) can lose weight, gain it, or stay roughly stable. Depends what we eat and drink, mostly, just like the rest of the population.
Sorry for the long post
That really wasn't long 😉

I have an appointment on Thursday with the diabetes team so I'll question it again! Thanks for replying

Hello @Louise 52 and welcome to the forum.

The only way you gain weight with insulin is by eating to much and using the correct amount of insulin to cover the excess food you are eating.

Unfortunately you have been put on the mixed insulin x 2 which doesn't allow for very much alteration if any at all.

Perhaps ask to go on MDI which is multi dose injections thus you just bolus for the amount of carbs you are going to eat.

Thanks. It's all new to me so I appreciate the information. I will definitely ask about MDI.
We all have to start somewhere 🙂 good luck with your apt.

Hi @Louise 52 the switch to Multiple Daily Injections has the potential to make life a lot more flexible. In two injections a day you need to eat to match the insulin already delivered. In MDI if you want to reduce the amount of carbs you eat you can as long as you also reduce the insulin. Your team can help you work out the appropriate ratio of insulin to carbs.

Good luck with your appointment @Louise 52 - well done on that reduction in BG levels.

Let us know how you get on at your follow-up, and keep asking questions 🙂
