Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi thanks for allowing me to join your forum. Please can someone point the way for me? I’ve just done an elastase test and I'm 44 ‘severely low’ and no reason why other than previous bowel surgery cancer and permanent stoma. Consultant has put me on Creon. I just need some tips re stuff to avoid. Also I’m extra thirsty and might be diabetic type 3 just waiting for blood tests to come back. F was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer so GP has put me on 2 week referral.

Welcome to the forum @Yammy190

Have you been having HbA1c checks to keep an eye on your overall glucose levels?

Thirst can be caused by many things, but it is associated with glucose levels over around 10mmol/L where the kidneys can try to flush out the excess in urine, with the extra weeing making you thirsty.

If you know your blood glucose levels are in the normal range, you would know it would be unlikely that your thirst was diabetes-related?

Thanks I’m waiting for HbA1c result cos we’re trying to link reasons to F Elastase result. Diabetes is suspect cause of EPI/PEI.

Have pancreatic insuffiency & take creon with every meal.

How much you need depends on food eaten, find meals like greasy fry up needs more creon than say a roast dinner, there's no standard dose to take so doses can vary for different individuals.

Tbh I don't avoid any foods except those don't like, so just try to eat normal healthy diet, but you might find it somewhat different so only way you'll know is by trial & error.

Good thing about creon is it isn't a drug just a supplement, so you will find consultant will let you find right dose that works for you.

Just one other thing, as your elastase test was low it might be worth asking to have a Dexa Scan, my consultant sent me for one & was found to be at Osteopenie stage, so was started on treatment that included taking calcium tablet daily.
