I have been getting quite bad pain just under my ribs and through to my back on the left hand side so saw my gp last week. He examined me and said he thinks it is either a problem with my colon or my pancreas 😱. I had blood taken to check my amylase and something else and have to speak with him on Monday to get the results and see what happens next.

I'm a bit scared that it might be my pancreas, wish he hadn't said that until we had the blood results!

Hope things work out OK and it's something that is straightforward to treat, try not to worry, although I know that must be difficult when the doctor has only been able to give you the vaguest of notions what it might be.

Well do you really want pains in either?

I think not meself.

Where's gallstones pain? - that would be less worrisome.

{{{Hugs}}} till you find out.

Isn't the pancreas on the opposite side to the gallbladder?

Newbs, I do hope it turns out to be something trivial.

Abdominal pain is very vague: the nerves in your abdominal organs don't work in the same way as the ones in, for example, your skin where you can put your hand on the exact place that the mosquito bit. A pang that feels as if it's coming from one abdominal area is not at all clear cut.

My mum had bile duct pain for years: she had her pancreas, ovaries, womb and kidneys scanned, most of these before someone even suggested the liver, let alone the bile duct.

It's hard to say which organ to 'want' it to come from: there are easy-to-treat pains and not so easy-to-treat pains that can originate from any organ, including the pancreas : don't worry!

Did I just say 'don't worry?'. Sorry that was stupid of course I appreciate you're worried. But don't worry just cos they said the word pancreas.

Best of Luck

It's the wrong side to be gallstone pain, that was my initial thought.

I am trying not to worry. I have had a lot of stomach and bowel problems and on various medications so hoping it is just something to do with that.

Will see what my gp has to say on Monday.

Hope you get sorted asap and it not serious.

Gallbladder pain can be any side and round your back x

Thanks Di. I didn't realise that, thought gallstone pain was always on the right.

The physical test for gallstones/diseased gallbladder - Murphy's sign - involves pressing down on the RH upper quadrant of the abdomen.

FWIW when I first experienced gallstone pain it was on my RHS and that's always where it always started before progressing round the middle and to my left shoulder.:(

Mine started in the middle and I thought I had indegestion for quite some time !! Are you being physically sick ? Are you in constant pain ?

Hope whatever the proble is it is not to serious and can be sorted swiftly - nothing worse than pain xxx

No, I'm not physically sick, just nauseous. I do have pain pretty much constantly but it does vary in intensity and position but is always on the left, either front or back, and it always feels like there is 'something there' beneath my ribs.

I spoke to my GP this morning and he said that my blood results for my pancreas and liver have come back 'normal', which is a relief. He thinks therefore that this is a problem with my colon but has referred me for an abdominal scan to see if this sheds any light on the problem.

Glad the bloods have come back OK. Did they give you a timescale for the scan x

No, gp just said that he'll refer me today and that I should get a date in the post soon.
