I have very variable BP and currently have high blood sugars I have been having a lot of problems with pain in my tongue and tingling lips. Could this be due to high sugars which I am now getting under control?

Hi and welcome

Tingling lips can sometimes be a hypo (low Blood Glucose) symptom for those of us who use insulin. Not sure I have heard of anyone suffering it or pain in the tongue with high levels.

How long have you been diagnosed and what medication, if any are you using to manage it.
How high have your BG levels (and HbA1c reading) been. If you are bringing them down from a high level then it might be a false hypo. Have you checked your BG levels when you experience this sensation, and if so what are they?

if you are getting pain from the tongue and have a dentist then it would be worth while getting an appointment to get things checked out. if you don't have a dentist call 111 there is an option to get an appointment with emergency dentists.

It isnt thrush is it? Something that can be found in the mouth and especially with high blood glucose.

As others said it's probably best to speak to your gp if it continues and you're unsure of the cause.

I took a canesten tablet a week ago. I have been suffering from a lot of stress and my BP has been very variable as well as being menopausal. . Am hoping that now that I am back in control of my food intake that things will settle down. Thank you

Sorry to hear about your sore tongue @Lyndsayd and about the stressful and difficult time you are having at the moment.

Hormonal changes and stress can make blood glucose more difficult to manage, and elevated BG can make infection more likely, so it’s a bit of a vicious circle :(

Can you see redness on the tongue? Might it be a sort of mouth ulcer?

Hopefully things will begin to clear as your BG returns towards the normal range, but do speak to your GP or NHS111 if things don’t clear up.

I would definitely have a word with your GP as there are many causes of a sore tongue which all give somewhat different symptoms. It may be useful to send a picture of your tongue as it's appearance may help with a diagnosis if you are unable to have a face to face appointment.
Changing your diet may have changed the balance of vitamins and minerals which could have had an impact.
A sore tongue can be miserable to cope with.

My HbA1c reading was around 70 .My reading this morning before food was 11. I have really cut down on my carbs and am also closely monitoring my BP.

The dietary change hasn't had much of an effect on your BG as yet then.

Sounds like you are doing the right things @Lyndsayd

Hope you see some positive impact from your efforts soon 🙂

It might be worth you going back to basics and keeping the food diary with honest quantities of everything you are having as there may be hidden carbs in some of the things you are having. You may be surprised at some of the things which you think are low carb but are still a bit too high for you to tolerate. Remember to check the total carbohydrate on your packaging not just the sugars, you might need a magnifying glass as it is usually on the back in minute print.
If you haven't got it the book or app Carbs and Cals is very good for helping you make good choices.

The list of causes of sore tongue is very long, from mouth ulcers all the way to syphilis. Common things systemically are iron deficiency anaemia, and B12 and folate deficiency. Smoking cigarettes can do it, too.

In other words, contact your doctor. Nobody on the forum can diagnose it, but it's not your diabetes.

I really love reading these forums, they are a mine of information and it has become my late afternoon reading. BG this morning was 6.8 and I am averaging 7 overall in 7 days which I am happy with. Also had my second Covid vaccination on Wedneday and apart from a very sore arm, I'm fine. Weight is reducing, I have lost 13lbs so far with the elusive first stone tantalisingly close. Also seem to have survived Dapagliflozin and regulated the water intake so even when I can venture into the world I won't need to tow a portaloo behind me. Should be (hopefully) having the first two month blood test in about a fortnight. Reading this forum has given me a long list of questions for my diabetic practitioner, thank you all for the insight.

I have a very sore tongue for over a year now ulcers developed on the right side, had a biopsy non malignant,
the Consultant and Dentist are working together to find a solution, turns out to be my teeth are the problem.

The Dentist will follow the Consultants advice my next appointment is mid April but one of the ulcers has disappeared
since the last appointment (relief at last), contact your Dentist asap to rule out any real problems
