Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello.
I'm happy to find this forum. I am not UK based and finding support is rather hard.
I am preempting my diagnosis before a follow up Dr's appointment this afternoon after blood work at the beginning of the week.
Family history of diabetes. I am overweight despite eatibg healthy and being active. Sport has become difficult over recent years. I never liked it much and other health and life issues mean I have put it on a back burner : until the pandemic as I have started walking and yoga again regularly since. No impact on weight however.
I feel totally depressed despite being the type of person who tries to put a positive spin on things and soldier on.
So I'm glad to 'meet' you all and read your experiences.

KayJee.I amnot UK based either. Would you mind telling us where you live?

Welcome @KayJee 🙂 Sorry you’re feeling down. If you’re feeling depressed, perhaps that would be something to chat with your doctor about if you have an appointment anyway. They might have good advice.

When you see them, it would be useful if you asked your actual numbers (I’m presuming you had an HbA1C test for the diabetes?). That way you know exactly where you’re starting from.

They are lots of people here who understand. Ask anything you want, or even just have a bit of a vent here. Life is extra stressful at the moment.

Thank you for your replies.
I am based in France. I have indeed had bloodwork done and the numbers are not encouraging (sorry I don't know what an HbA1C test is : obviously we use different jargon here). My glycemic index is at 7.97mmol/l up from 5.95 last year, and my cholesterol level stands at 6.28mmol/l up from 5.90 last year.

My doctor has referred me to a dietician and am now waiting for an appointment. Unfortunately this will not be reimbursed by our social security so I don't know how many appointments I will be able to afford.

Good news is I have been offered a COVID vaccine, which, as I have to work in a secondary school surrounded by super spreaders, is a relief. (Schools are open and France has been slow off the mark with tests and vaccines.)

As a musician, I am tempted by Diabetic Frog's air guitar!

It's nice to know there's a group out there for handy hints.

Have a nice day, all.

A glycaemic index is a suspect what we call a HBA1C.

An HbA1C test is a blood test that shows your average blood sugar over the past 3 months. I presume your glycemic index is similar. Let me see if I can find a chart...

I couldn’t find a chart that showed what I wanted, but if that 7.97 is like an HbA1C that would put you in the early 60s in the U.K. scale.

@KayJee . Thanks for replying - I wasn't being nosey just wanted to help if you were, like I, in Spain. I am pleased that you have had replies that will be of help. This forum has been a Godsend to me and I am sure that you will find answers to any questions that you have.

@KayJee, I live and work in Germany so you can be assured there is a very international thread to the community here and you’ll always find someone here to chat too, it’s a mine of great advice and help with a lot of great people

France seems to give an HbA1c result as its corresponding average blood glucose level, so:

5.95 mmol/L is 35 mmol/mol or 5.4%
7.97 mmol/L is 49 mmol/mol or 6.6%

HbA1c = glycated haemoglobin = (according to google translate) hemoglobine glyquee

Sorry about the missing accents @KayJee !! o_O Don’t know how to add them on my iPad.

I can answer this. Hold the key down on the letter you want to add an accent to, it will bring up everything. Drag across and voilá! See what I did there? 😉

Oh yeah, I see it. Nicely done!😎

Nope, can’t get it to work. I’ve never been able to get it to work. I can see the accented letter I want, but no amount of dragging, tapping, praying, shouting, sobbing gets it to work. My iPad hates me.

How did the follow-up appointment go @KayJee? 🙂

Gently does it, iPads are sensitive, just like me! TBF you’ve to be quick as it may change your accent to an umlaut! Ce lá vie. PS why doesn’t umlaut not have an umlaut?

Oo, Oo, I know this - an umlaut makes a simple vowel sound into a longer vowel sound. For example (thank you Mr Google), the umlaut in Schön makes that vowel nice n looooong. :D So the word umlaut doesn’t need an umlaut cos all its vowel sounds are short n dumpy.
Anyone still awake?

I didn’t know that and I’ve got a CSE grade 2 in German! Woohoo! Mind you it’s 45 years ago since I did my exam!

I got a B in my O-level but like you many, many years ago...I was chuffed to bits cos my half-German friend Gabriela got a C, hahaha. :D 😉 Alf weird science.

We had numbers when I did my O levels - 1-9. Anything up to 5 was a pass. Got 1s in both English-es and Biology, 2s in French and Maths, 8s in Physics & German and 9 in Latin. You can see which ones interested me and I liked the teachers of, can't you?
