Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello, I have had type 2 for about ten years and feel that I need some support. I have no respect for my condition and know it will come back to bite me one day. I spoke to my diabetic nurse today who recommended that I try this site. My problem is overeating and also chocolate and cakes (which I have nearly every day) I want to look after my health and have a lot to live for so hopefully someone out there will help me see the light

[You seem to be aware you are doing yourself harm so is there any specific reason you are overeating and indulging in chocolate and cakes ? Is it a kind of "I'll do what I want to and deal with the consequences later" ?

I'm just looking for information, not putting you down in any way.

Hi Over60

Welcome to the forum 🙂

I've taken the liberty of moving your post to the 'Newbies' section so that you'll get the usual warm welcome 🙂

Really pleased that your nurse recommended you come here, and well done for taking that step - some healthcare professionals seem a bit dubious of the worth of these online forums but you seem to have a more forward thinking one.

It might help others here share relevant experiences with you if you were able/happy to let us know a bit more about how you manage your diabetes... Are you on any medication? Do you test your own blood glucose levels with a meter?

Ask away with any questions (nothing will be considered silly or too obvious), or just feel free to rant. D can be a very frustrating condition to live with but it is possible to manage it these days and still live a healthy, happy, varied life too.

In the meantime you might find some of the links and resources on this page interesting: http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=10406

Hiya, welcome from me too.

When I'm trying not to do something (majorly at present - smoke!) - I find it helps to keep my brain and fingers busy so Forums acan be jolly useful for that. So are crosswords! But the latter you don't get to talk to lots of nice people. :D

Welcome Over60. Glad to hear your nurse suggested this site to you 🙂

If resisting food is a problem, then perhaps it's worth trying a different approach eg increasing exercise as well as trying to cut down on chocolate and cake - perhaps aiming for chocolate / cake not more than 3 times per week, for example. It's difficult to eat when cycling 🙂

Hi Over60, welcome to the forum. There are no easy answers to eating cakes and chocolate, we would all like to do so, but for me its when I check with my meter what my blood sugar is after eating some, that I choose not too now. However the odd treat is there now and again.🙂

One chocolate I have found ok in small squares is the 81% type,(J D Gross) as its mainly cocoa solids. It is a bit tempting though to have more, but still have to watch the calories.

Welcome over60 to the site - I have quoted two things that stand out in your post.

If you know that it will come back to bite you one day - then you have a grudging respect - so that is a start.

The second point I have quoted shows that you do want to do something. Try and use the things you have to live for as an incentive to put your diet in order. If you find your weaknesses are cakes and chocolate you could try giving them up (we are in Lent - somehow for me anyway Lent makes it easier to give up). If you don't do Lent then maybe try having progressively smaller slices of cake or make the chocolate a treat for special occaisions.

Do you have a meter so that you can check how your blood sugars are doing.

Welcome to the forum Over60 🙂 We also have the Weight Loss Group section of the forum where you will find a lot of handy tips!

I love high cocoa solid dark chocolate, it's so much more .... chocolatey - than milk choc.

However I do find it very sickly even though I have eaten whole bars of it at times in the past. And had the belly-ache to prove it. I have found as I've got older, I just don't get over belly-ache like that half as quickly as I used to in my 20's 30's 40's - don't think I've binged since I was about 50 LOL.

So now I too am over 60 I'm a lot more choosey in what I eat !

And I'd rather savour a square or 2 of it, just let it melt on my tongue, lasts ages unlike less intense choc because it has less fat, so you get tons of chocolate endorphins without eating shedloads of it. Wonderful invention!

I find it sooooo difficult not to have the occasional biscuit (or two) and a couple of sweets almost every day, even though I know I shouldn't!

I find the idea of having to take medication AND change my diet a bit like taking anti-malaria drugs then not going abroad!

It's early days for me in this new world at the moment, so I hope it gets easier - I do eat a lot less rubbish than I used to, and have lost around 4st in the last couple of years, but the damage had already been done!

Thank you for replying - I didn't think to put my medication on my message - I am on Metformin 500mg tabs (4 a day) and Ramipril 10mg (1 a day). My nurse also gave me, what I wondered was a good suggestion, advice that If I can't do without chocolate that I buy the pack of the mini bars (milky way etc) and freeze them so that when I feel like chocolate I could take one out and it would last me all night trying to get through it.

She has asked me to change the way I take my tablets (2 at a time instead of one after every meal) and cut down on my eating so I am going to try this and have to go back in six weeks for more blood tests.

Thanks for taking an interest

Thanks for replying - I know I am doing wrong but its when I eat chocolate that I deliberately do not check my reading. However after the ticking off I got from the nurse yesterday I will be trying harder.

She advised me to buy a pack of the mini bars (milky ways etc) and put them in the freezer so when I want chocolate I can take one out and it will take hours to suck my way through it. I am going to give it a go

Hi Over60, welcome to the forum 🙂 Many people find that chocolate with a high cocoa content helps satisfy the craving without too much impact on levels - just one or two squares, kept in the fridge as suggested. 🙂

I have found that my tastes have changed considerably from pre-diagnosis and I no longer crave sweet things - still have the occasional treat, but not very often and usually with a meal.

Thanks for replying - you have made me think because I should be thinking about the others I have to live for instead of myself. I do have a meter but sometimes when I know the reading will probably be high I don't use it. After ten years I have become blaze' (spelling?) about it. Time for changes -Thanks again

A warm welcome from me..................

We all have bad habits, but your chances of breaking them and creating some good new ones has just increased by seeking support from your fellow diabetics...........😉
