Just had a night from hell with over night bs

Went out with family for an early birthday meal, very nice country pub.

I had the following :
Pate with wholemeal toast
Steak and ale pie, lots of veg and chunky chips
Sticky toffee pudding
2 glasses wine
6 units novorapid increased to cover pastry and dessert

Everyone came back to mine for coffee etc and by then I was feeling odd, tested and was at 2.1 so out came the orange juice and then I drank my coffee as well.

After the food i was suffed (I had not eaten everything on my plate, bit of starter, 3/4 of main, 1/2 dessert), so as you can image even more liquid in my stomach.

So re tested after 10 mins only up to 3.3, nurse sister nagging me to take more orange juice or glucose tabs. Told her I would test again after everyone had gone as I didn't want to end up sky high.

I went to bed feeling really of, tested and back to 2.0, 3 more glucose tablets and feel asleep for half and hour, then hubby nudged me and I tested again still only 3.0 so thought I'd give it a bit more time.

Felt really sick, kept getting up and walking about, getting back In bed, napping a little and then at about 2.30 had to run for the bathroom and was violently sick!

Cleaned the bathroom and myself re tested bs was 3.7 then got into bed and passed out.

Woke this morning with bs of 2.6!

I was supposed to be taking the bikes to parsley hay today and cycling to Tissington.... Think I'm gonna have to give it a miss

Not really sure why things went to pots last night but I don't want that to happen again, hubby said he was considering taking me to the hospital.

I'm very sorry to hear this Di, what an awful end to what should have been an enjoyable day :(

I wonder if it's a combination of things: your recent increase in exercise has made you more sensitive, both to your basal and your bolus insulins, so you need to look at reducing both whilst you are so active. I know you have been waking on the low side for a few days now - did you reduce your levemir? When I am 'in training' my insulin requirements can fall quite dramatically, by 50% for my novorapid and 80-95% for my lantus.

It also sounds like perhaps the insulin you took with your meal may have not hit your system until later than usual, or perhaps you overestimated the increase needed for dessert. Were you able to eat or drink anything carby after you were sick? If not, that may be why you still woke so low.

I hope that you are feeling much better, and that your levels are much more stable soon. 🙂 Sorry you had to abandon your day out.

Hi northy I thought the increase in exercise might have added to the problem (5 k yesterday) .. I couldn't eat after being sick. I also reduced the levemir to 6 last night.

I had a great night with the family x

We are going to walk to the park later x
