Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey everyone

Its been over a week since i was first taken into hospital with DKA and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It's still a shock to find that i've been trying to reverse the affects of type 2 diabetes only to find out that i was probably making myself more poorly.

I'm still very unsettled at the moment, blood sugars are staying above 15 and have only got down to 8 twice since being released from hospital. i'm still trying to get an appointment with the doctors regarding my arm as it is still very swollen and sore after the canular.

I've been watching my carb and sugar intake and i have to admit its been getting me really down, big challenge the other day was it was my brothers 16th and i had to sit and watch everyone have birthday cake and couldn't touch it because i knew it would probably put me back in hospital with the sugar content.

This morning i've woken and i feel sick again blood sugars are high but im going to see how they go over dinner as i've already took my 20 units of isophane and 12 units of humalog. I've no ketones in my urine but feel rubbish anyway.

Was it this hard for anyone else when they were first diagnosed, i feel like my whole life has changed now and i'm feeling a bit down at the moment :(

I think you are bound to be feeling down lets see what have the last months entailed.

Diagnosed with type 2 - shock - trying to get head around it.
Keep deteriating despite following advice
Emergency admittance to hospital
Discover you are type 1 not type 2
You are now dealing with shock again and your body needs to recover from the stress of the DKA plus your elevated bloods.
Try to get a prescription - feel you've been given the run around.
Try to get a Drs appointment - due to swollen arm - no success
Struggling to get decent BMs
Feeling lost.

I would say with all the above (and I suspect other stuff going on in your life) I can't imagine anyone would be happy.

So its not surprising you are feeling the way you are.

It can be hard at first but hopefully with the help of your nurse (who is the one brights spot in this) you will get to grips with things.

If I was you I would speak to the receptionist again and say something like.

Have you got an appointment sheduled for the Dr yet. If the receptionist won't give you an appointment - ask for a phone consultation.

I hope you manage to see your Dr today.

Sorry to hear that you are still feeling bad - things will improve I am sure. I was still in hospital a week after my diagnosis and even though I had about a hundred nurses and doctors looking after me (or so it seemed!) I was still getting levels in the upper 20s after eating. When I left hospital after 8 days I had the opposite problem to you - my levels were frequently low, so there was quite a bit of adjustment going on from the DSNs when I reported in. Something to bear in mind is that, after DKA, your body has endured a pretty stressful time, with every part of you affected by the increased acidity of your blood. I don't know if there's any medical truth in it, but for me it seemed to take a few weeks to recover from this shock and my levels started to come in range more often than not.

Keep doing what you are doing, watching the carbs and checking frequently, but try not to be too disheartened by the numbers at this stage. If you do have an infection in your arm, this may be causing your levels to be higher too - hope you can get some attention for it soon!

Hoping your levels settle soon, which will make you feel much better, mentally and physically 🙂

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a tough time. I can't remember what it felt like just after diagnosis because I was only 2 - what I do know is that you will learn more about the diabetes and, hopefully with changes to your insulin, you will feel much better very soon......and be able to eat birthday cake if you want to! Big hugs to you

My only suggestion for the lack of appointment would be to ring NHS direct.

They can assess your symptoms and, if they feel it's justified, advise you to go to A&E, or perhaps contact the GP for you to stress the urgency.

The doctors is apparently closed today so not gonna get much luck with them.

I do have alot of stress on my mind but im just trying to ignore it, we have to move house as our tenancy runs out in March and the house is way too small for us.
I am also a carer for my mother in law who is registered blind and has a long list of problems including anxiety and depression. husbands trying to help as much as possible but he is also trying to get a job. My mother in law doesn't want respite care and reckons she can do more for herself even though we have to do most of things for her.
My daughter is confused as to whats happening, shes only two and half and weith me going into hospital she got upset and has been stupidly clingy with me since i got back but she is also testing my patience a lot more.

I'm just trying to keep as positive and happy as possible cause i know stress can send sugar levels up but its a bit difficult at the moment especially as im not getting any help from anywhere, my diabetes nurse is helping in a fashion but she only helped yesterday cause i phoned her and stressed my concerns to her, my personal diabetes nurse was unavailable.

I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through (((hugs)))

After all your body has been through you are bound to feel rotten pysically and mentally. It is a disgrace that you have had no help from your doctors, and can't believe they are closed today😱

Your poorly arm will not be helping your blood sugars - if you cannot see a doctor today - any doctor - then pleas phone NHS direct - I think they will suggest a trip to A&E. I know you have a lot of people dependent on you and probably don't want to make a fuss and/or worry your daughter again but you need that arm looked at IMHO, and you cannot even begin to get your BS down if you are fighting an infection.

Lecture over - sorry if I am being bossy but I know what it's like when everyone elses needs come first - this time they dont!

Please take care Xx

I don't know if it is infected or not i mean it hurts a lot and it is swollen but could it just be because of the liquids???

We're also stuck at the moment because our stupid phone service is on hold through talk talk being absolute poopheads!!! So can't phone my diabetes nurse or the hospital.

Feel like im headbutting a brick wall

This just all sounds awful and I am not surprised you feel like it's all too much - you are not getting the care you need and deserve for the physical side of things, as well as your body recovering from DKA, and on the mental side you've had a lot to deal with just for yourself, let alone the other people in your life. My levels would be high just trying to deal with all that normally!

You will get there, I promise. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise.

If it helps you (it does me), when things seem to be getting too much, I break everything down into 'bite-size' chunks and look at them individually. Somehow it helps and doesn't make them seem so daunting or all-consuming.

Sending you loads and loads of hugs. Please feel free to PM me if you want to talk outside the threads. xx

I remember my first few weeks. Its horrid.

But today is my 7 year anniversity of being diaignosed and im fine. This time last year id just given birth to my daughter not something i ever thought id be able to do with diabetes, but i did.

Once you have got your levels under control and understand your body and how your meds and food affect it, you can still have a 'normal' life.

You can eat cake when your low or when you know how to adjust your meds for what your eating.

Im always eating chocolate and junk lol, you just need to know when you can and when you cant.

Its about a balanced diet.

Its a challange being a mum with diabetes, sometimes you have to put yourself first.

That is my top advice for you. Your health needs to be number one at the min.

Hope you start feeling better. xx

Would the NHS walk in centre be a possibility ?

http://www.sheffield.nhs.uk/walk-in/

If there is even a slight risk of it being infected, it needs to be treated asap or could result in even worse control and other probems.

Or maybe ask if someone else can ring NHS direct on your behalf ?

Rob

Its a right trek to the walk in centre to be honest and i was hoping i didn't have to go but i am going to phone them as soon as possible or get my mum to phone them so that i can find out whether its anything to worry about.

Really don't want to end up back in hospital so im hoping its nothing :(

I can understand that you don't want to walk to the walk in centre but you need to have someone look at you arm. It may be a waste of time and they say there is no problem. However, if there is an infection it won't improve until you start on antibiotics.

People have said this to me before and its this.

Who is going to look after x, y and z if you get ill. You need to get some care so that you are able to look after those who rely on you.

Sorry if this sounds harsh - and I hope things pick up for you soon.

Well think its definately time to go to the walk in centre or something i've not got diarhoa and have been feeling sick all morning with painful stomach cramps...things just arent getting easier, the hubby has diarhoea too.

I suggest you call NHS24 on 08454 242424 for advice as soon as you can.

Hi everyone been to doctors, i have a bit of food poisoning/stomach bug and damaged tissue in my arm which will eventually mend but will be painful for a while.

Thanks to everyone for the messages just keeping an eye on my blood sugar level.

Glad to hear you have had the arm seen to, hope you are fully recovered arm-wise and stomach-wise very soon! 🙂

Thank you Northerner i hope things settle soon :D

Well done for getting it sorted. Always better to know than not. 🙂

Sorry to hear you've got a bug but at least the wrist should get better by itself which is a relief.

Meanwhile, your BGs will be running higher but should start to come down once all your problems start to clear up.

ANy stress will generally keep your BG high, so maybe you can try to reduce that bit by bit as you go on.🙂

Rob

Glad you managed to get to the doctor, have you been given anything for it, or will it get better by itself?

Hope your upset stomach gets better soon too, and you can start to get your BS under control soon. Don't expect too much until you have cleared up the stomach bug and probably the poorly arm.

Take care Xx
