HOW FAT PEOPLE CAN LIVE LONGER
BEING fat can help you live longer in old age, according to new research into the health of the elderly. The death rate among men and women, aged 70 to 75, is lowest for those classed as overweight, a study says. And those pensioners classed as obese have the same risk of death as people of 'normal' weight.

18 stone lads aged 14 youngest to have gastric band operations on NHS
Two boys of 14 had gastric band operations on the NHS - after they each ballooned to over 18st. The surgery was done at Sheffield Children's Hospital after doctors ruled their "morbid obesity" was life-threatening. Expert Tam Fry said the boys - the youngest to have the ?7,000 ops on the NHS - must have been at serious risk. They are double the average weight.

Spray version of 'cuddle hormone can ease symptoms of autism'
A nasal spray containing the 'cuddle hormone' oxytocin can ease some of the symptoms of autism, research shows. People with autism who used the spray became more sociable and trusting. Sufferers often find it hard to communicate and form relationships. Oxytocin, which promotes feelings of trust and confidence, is released naturally in the body and is linked to sexual attraction and childbirth.

Sleep yourself skinny: It's not only leaving us shattered and ill. Experts say too little shut-eye is making us fat
For women, lack of sleep is so common that the standard reply to 'How are you?' is: Shattered!' But a growing body of evidence indicates that chronic tiredness isn't just affecting our ability to function well - it's also making us fat. Around 60 per cent of British adults are overweight or obese, and research suggests that the cause may not be overeating or lack of exercise, but sleep deprivation. As you will see, the reason that singer Jennifer Lopez looks ten years younger than she is may be due to her ability to get eight hours of sleep a night. 'We have done a series of studies looking at weight and sleep, and studying the metabolic rate,' says Dr Shahrad Taheri, a consultant endocrinologist at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
