A heartfelt new study suggests that people who try to be more optimistic might also reap the benefit of a healthier heart. Taking into account several biometrics, researchers compared the effect of optimism on the overall health of more than 5,000 subjects.

“Individuals with the highest levels of optimism have twice the odds of being in ideal cardiovascular health compared to their more pessimistic counterparts,” explains study lead author Rosalba Hernandez. She is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She goes on to say, “This association remains significant, even after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics an poor mental health.”
