Feeling in a difficult situation at the moment. My 17 year old wants to have her belly pierced and I am worried about any risks. My elder (non diabetic daughter) had hers done at the same age with no problems and as we have always treated them the same, I am finding it hard to say no. She has always been well controlled although we did have a difficult period with glandular fever she is well now. I am just worried about the risk of infection but on the other hand dont want to treat her differently. I am glad she didnt just get it done without asking but doesnt stop me worrying.

Well give her credit like you say she asked a heck of a lot would of just went off and got it done at her age,I kinda think if she wants to get it done then let her, just make doubly sure she knows they is a few risks involved, when I was her age I would of gone out and done it then waited for the inevitable flack 🙄

Dunno if this would ruin her street cred but maybe go along with her and ask the piercist(does that word exist) to quash some of your fears

Nah, just find out where she's going and saunter along there on your own, casually like you're used to it - and ask pertinent questions! she'd squirm with embarrassment if you accompanied her and asked, I'm sure LOL

As long as the establishment etc are clean, and she ensures she does looks after it while healing, should be ok... And she knows that if something does seem not right she has to get it check ASAP...

As said, first time I knew my daughter's had them done, was after they had it done😱

Having well-controlled diabetes should mean a piercing won't cause any major problems. You'll also be on difficult grounds to say no because if I was a teenage with diabetes wanting a piercing, my first response to any denial would be that I got piercings from needles and lancets constantly!

I've got my own personal opinions on piercings but I guess that's not what you're asking for here....

She should be fine, when I went to the tattoo/piercing studio with my bf while he was getting a tattoo alad with diabetes want his nose/tongue pierced, he told them he was diabetic and that he has it under control and he was aloud to get it done, so don't see why it should be a problem 🙂

as a part qualified piercer with many piercings myself i will say this.... some studios will not pierce or tattoo a diabetic person.... it is in the consent form you sign when you go to be pierced..... this is partly in my opinion due to ignorance but also because if a diabetic is not well controlled then the piercing will heal more slowly.... most studios also ask for id and wont pierce anyone below the age of 18 unless a parent is present..... the navel is also a notoriously slow healing part of the body for a piercing usually hampered by catching on belt buckles etc..... BUT having said all that i am type one and have had a hell of a lot of piercings done since becoming diabetic and not experienced any problems... good control and aftercare of the piercing is key..... good luck with it all and feel free to give me a shout should you have any questions or issues when it has been done although any reputable studio will also be able to help

Thanks for all the advice. Feeling happier about it now, and will check the place out first and make sure she follows the aftercare so fingers crossed she wont have any problems.
