Not a diabetic thing, however.
In a week, Friday 25, I'm going into hospital to have a defibulator (for my heart) fitted.
Anyone in the area want to visit, bring some treacle sponge.

Hope your op goes really well Ralph but it would be a bad friend who brought you treacle sponge and custard. This is the 'nutritional' make up of an average dish;

Amount Per 1 dish
Calories 692 Kcal (2897 kJ)
Calories from fat 216 Kcal
% Daily Value*
Total Fat 24g 37%
Sodium 1mg 0%
Total Carbs 110g 37%
Sugars 81g 90%
Protein 10g

😱😱😱

I hope things go smoothly for you Ralph 🙂 It's funny you mention treacle sponge - I remember when I was in hospital at diagnosis, I was in for 8 days so sampled quite a lot of the food. We were given a menu each day to choose the following day's food, and options were marked whether they were suitable or not for various conditions. The ONLY thing that was forbidden to diabetics was treacle pud and custard! 😱 With hindsight, it's no surprise that my levels were rocketing up to 25-30 mmol/l after eating! I was starving all the time (the effect of getting insulin after a long period of not getting enough, and a big chap in another bed told me how to get more than the standard portion - just amend it on the form! So, I asked for chips AND mash, or three weetabix etc.!

In reality, most of the meals were completely unsuitable for diabetics, hugely carb-laden! 😱

I was diagnosed in hospital. I was there 3 weeks, just sat on ward. I lost weight.
After I was told, dinner came round. Apple pie and custard. Tea, cake and custard. Following day, ginger cake and custart, and then there actually was treacle spunge and custard. And they were quite willing to give me it. Sometimes people got pre packed sandwiches, like the ones you get in Newagents. The crappy ones (sandwiches that is).
I think one of wards/bays had a menu system. Didn't work I think I wasn't in that one long.
I got moved several times. Always at 1am.

Also
IT'S Treacle Spunge Man.

Good luck with your operation! Hope it goes well 🙂

Looking at that picture makes it almost worth the 692 calories... Almost!

Good Luck Ralph. Hope all goes OK. I'd bring you some but then I would feel guilty.:D

The treacle sponge looks delicious.

I'm sure the op will be a huge success and you will be a model perfect patient and make a full recovery.

Not as big or major operation as heart surgery, but in the last couple of months I have had four operations 😱 on my foot, so have some understanding of the worry an op causes.

I remember hospital meals too. No one seemed bothered what you ate, mind you fruit juice was marked as suitable for diabetics on the menu. Good luck with the op.

Ooo I try to keep out of hospitals when I'm sick...fraught with hazards and carb laden food. Last time I was out of the Ward having a scan they left me a grease laden cheese pasty I could hardly lift with potato wedges followed by chocolate sponge and custard. I could feel my BG rising looking at it! 😱

Good luck Ralph

By the time I got back from my scan (angiagram?) dinner had gone and I ended getting a crappy sandwhich from a vending machine myself.
Biggest problem with hospitals is they're full of sick people.

Could be worse, my arteries are clear. Well, that's what they said! Still, it's the heart.

Thanks everyone.

On my last ward placement, there was a board in the kitchen to write down people's dietary requirements. There was one diabetic patient on the board yet he got the same food as everyone else which always came with either chips or mash, even pasta! The kosher meal looked awful, was just a frozen microwaveable meal but the halal options were very nutritious and homemade from a restaurant and delivered fresh daily! (My placement was in an area with a very high Muslim population although many other non Muslim patients caught on and started ordering halal meals!)

Strangely enough Rosie, I've heard some prisoners order the halal options for just that reason! 😉

Sat sitting. Waiting.
I'm wondering how specific to be about which hospital I'm talking about on any occasion. I've been dealing with 4 hospitals, and dealing with Health Care people based at several other places.
I remember halal being mentioned in one hospital. I think some of the ordinary meals were microwave meals.

Couple of hours ago they did pricked finger blood test. 6.0.

P.s. got a phone signal here. That'll rule out a couple of places for today's business.

Hope your surgery went well and you recover quickly 🙂

Thanks. Came out at 2:20. When we'll. Have I to make the joke about keep hearing keys jangling? Sandwiches are better here.

Day time nurse had just been in and introduced night time nurse to the room. Haven't had that before. It's my first time actually stopping at this hospital.
Foods better here.
Several people have been round to see me, some to do checks/tests. All seem happy and pleasant. As fare as I know everything is good.
Fish for tea.

Glad to hear everything's well. How long are you staying in for? How's the food?!

Left half an hour ago in Transport. One meal, one sandwich and breakfast. Better than other hospital food I've had. Just got home while posting. It's surprising host fast you can out of Leeds sometimes.
How are you doing Rosie?

Glad all went well for you Ralph.
