Hi everyone,

I'm working on a research project aiming at developing a quality of life questionnaire for people with type 1 diabetes, and I?m looking for some help!

I've put together an online questionnaire to help with the research, and I?m hoping to get as many responses to it as possible. If any of you have the time to fill in my questionnaire then that would be absolutely brilliant.

Based on responses so far, the main questionnaire takes around 12 minutes to complete. At the end there is an option to fill in some further questions, which takes around 8 more minutes, if you choose to do it.

With your help I will be able to develop a quality of life questionnaire which can then be used in diabetes research ? for example, in measuring the outcome of programs such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating), or the beneficial effects of support groups.

Please click on the link to fill out the questionnaire:

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for your help! Please do contact me if you have any questions or comments on the research. My contact details are given at the beginning and end of the questionnaire.

Best wishes,

Catriona

Done it too, through the DAFNE forum though...........:D

Completed. Some very well worded questions in there. Someone has clearly done their homework ! :D

I hope it helps.

I had to pause at the very first question though - even though my BG levels are well-controlled, I would never expect them to always be below 7 mmol/l, although I might hope for that pre-meal.

Thank you to all those who have already completed it! Either from here or the DAFNE forum - the responses are adding up, which is very exciting.

It is a bit of a marathon - I tried to cut it down as much as possible (making some elements optional was part of that), but it is still pretty long. I'm hoping the length wont put too many people off.

Thank you for the comments about the wording of the questions! Feedback is really helpful, especially if you notice any questions which seem odd or awkward. I'm taking notes!

Done! I agree that the questions were great - it sounds very much to me as though the researcher is very familiar with Type 1 diabetes & its difficulties. The wording of some questions made me think you'd read my mind!

I'll second that. They were very soul searching and well, I'm sure we've all done a fair few of similar questionnaires in our time. It definitely did make me think. That's probably why it took so long and why I needed pain killers afterwards haha!

oops, I tried to do it, but as soon as I said I wasn't diabetic, it went straight to the end! I assumed I could fill it in as a parent of a diabetic. Should I fill it in as if I was diabetic or just leave it?

It's for over-18s Monica, so probably not worth doing (unless Kate says differently)

The introduction explains that the questionnaire is aimed at people who are both over 18 years AND have type 1 diabetes. So, if you don't fit both those characteristics, I guess this questionnaire isn't for you.

lol, serves me right for not reading it properly🙄

Hi Monica, sorry for not replying earlier! Those who did reply are quite right though, I'm afraid the questionnaire is developed for adults with type 1 diabetes. Your question did get me wondering whether there were many diabetes-specific quality of life questionnaires for children, and whether children and parents ratings of the child's quality of life would be very different. I think it'd be a very interesting area to look into!

Yes it would be very interesting to me too. Carol doesn't talk about her feelings about Diabetes at all. I know she hates it. And I'm sure she thinks I restrict her more than I'd have done if she wasn't diabetic, which in some circumstances is true😱

Done. Wimped out on the aditional ones though. Sorry 🙄

Monica, I'm sorry, that sounds really difficult for you and for Carol. I wish I knew something to help! Are there many parents of children with diabetes on here for you to talk to?

Mike, thanks for filling in the questionnaire. I don't need as many participants for the additional bits (although, of course, as many as possible is great!), so just filling in the main questionnaire is absolutely fine and much appreciated! 🙂

Only just seen this, done and dusted.

Needed concentration but I did think the questions better than some I've seen.

However Kate, there were some Q's about how you feel about your physical health and currently I am actually a bit concerned about mine however it has nothing to do with diabetes and I was able to say that elsewhere but not sure if you will relate that back to the physical health questions, which had I not had this other prob, I'd have answered 'hardly a care in the world' or similar!
