It's about time

I've just gone on to insulin (I am Type 2, 15 years) and have informed the DVLA, they took some of the categories off me - has anyone successfully got them back? (7.5 tonne etc.)

Possibly no chance until after you've stabilised on insulin Eagle - we now don't automatically get anything, so my C1 was taken off me at licence renewal last year though I could have requested it be re-instated immediately, however since I've never needed or wanted to drive anything over 3.5 tonne I didn't bother.

Should I decide I want it now though after 12 months without it, I would need to pass another test. After that (and anything above a C1) and regaining it, I would need a medical every 12 months in order to retain that category whereas just 'cars etc' they only want to cross examine me every 3 years and don't automatically require medicals like they do for all higher categories.

It's much the same as reaching the ripe old age of 70 and automatically losing anything over 3.5 tonne.

You need to consider what you actually NEED and want both now and in the foreseeable future, to see if it's worthwhile all the extra faffing about on your part to try and retain it every year. If so - apply immediately and see what they say - otherwise if you leave a gap in future you'll have to take or re-take the appropriate driving tests, at your own cost - and they ain't exactly cheap.
