Relationship to Diabetes

So it’s been a week since I was told about my diabetes. I’ve changed my eating habits quite a bit no chocolate, crisps or anything like that. Yesterday I woke up with a reading of 6.3 I had cereal for breakfast, rice cakes for lunch 2 with peanut better and celery and 2 with ham and cheese and an apple did some gardening and felt like I’d hit a brick wall by 4pm checked and I was at 4.8. Sausages and veg for tea with fruit and yogurt for a treat bed time reading was 7.9. My highest the whole week I’ve been checking. This morning 6.4 at 4.30am.
I do have bad health anxiety so I’m really struggling with not knowing if I’m doing the right things. I’m cutting down on food so I can loose weight but am I getting false low readings because of that?
I’ve still not taken my metformin

It seems like you are doing well esp as you are new at this.

I am thinking that when you felt you had hit a brick wall, it might have been what we call a false hypo, this happens because your brain has become used to much higher glucose levels ( our brain runs on glucose) and when those levels suddenly drop even though they are as in your case normal levels, it sends out panic signals.
What symptoms did you have
What cereal did you have for breakfast

Thanks for your reply. I felt very shakey and like I had no energy. I’ve felt like that a little today also but hope it’s just my body adjusting. Before it was disgusting the amount of sugar I ate so I hope just cutting that out will help me see decent results in 3 months time.

My cereal is Tesco’s low fat special flakes made from rice and wholewheat. I’ve found some weight watchers wraps in Tesco’s today they only have 1g of fat and 1g of sugar

The next time that happens you could have a cup of tea & a biscuit as that won't really affect your blood sugars much but, should stop you feeling so bad! Just until your body adjusts to the lower levels. You're doing well! 🙂

Love your name, baked beans a favourite of mine: ok, for me, in moderation! 😛:D

Yes that does sound very similar to a false hypo , we all get different hypo symptoms, though unpleasant a false hypo is not at all dangerous, and as your body adjusts to normal glucose levels they will lessen then disappear.

Sometimes it’s possible to fool your brain that all is well by eating a very low carb snack, such as a little cheese, an egg a few nuts.

Thank you I think I will have to give it ago. Tea is another swap I’ve made I’ve started drinking green tea

I love bake beans too a week ago I would have thought nothing to eating them with bread and butter I didn’t realise how much sugar was in them.

My partner thinks I’m being too strict with myself especially while I’m at work, it involves lots of walking (managed 27 miles last week) and climbing ladders he thinks I should be having more than a salad and an apple

You might feel better if you stop eating grains as they are so high carb, the cereal and rice cake will be 2/3rds starch by weight, far too high for me, and fruit is problematic as it is high in sugars. Eating more low carb foods, lots of low carb veges, salads, a small serving of berries with cream and coffee with cream keep my blood glucose levels fairly steady - sometimes you can go low as the day goes on as insulin resistance falls and the insulin released earlier takes effect.

I find beans ok for me as long as I don't have too much but, my dietician says you don't need to worry about the sugar because of the fibre, that slows down its release. But, I learnt from the forum that different foods affect people differently & some can eat beans & some can't.

If you test before you eat & then test 90 minutes to 2 hours afterwards to see if your rise in blood sugars is no more than 2 or 3mmol at the most you'll see if you can eat them. If still higher, you could try a smaller portion & test again the next time! why cut something out if you like it & it doesn't send your soaring!

Just a point from your post. When looking at labels you should be checking total carbohydrate and not just sugar because all carbohydrates turn into blood glucose. I suspect the total carbohydrate in the wraps will be much higher than the 1g from the sugar. Need to look at the flakes in the same light. I tend to ignore the description on the front of the packet and go straight for the nutrition label which tells you the all the things that the marketing people do not want to draw to your attention.

Thank you I’ll have a look at that. I usually have them about 6am then when If check my sugar levels about 10 it’s usually in the 5s I thought that meant then were ok to eat

Maybe, and hopefully, they will be OK for you although they might not be for somebody else. When I am trying something out I tend to check before and one and a half hours afterwards to see what the effect is.

Sorry it might seem a silly question but why an hour and a half - 2 hours? Am I leaving it to late waiting 4 hours? I just tend to check on my breaks

The official method is to test just before starting to eat, then two hours from that first test.
If you are waiting 4 hours it tells you nothing about how the meal affected your BG levels.

Maybe I’m looking at it wrong. I thought that as long as your sugar levels are coming down it’s ok. Last night before my meal I was 5.3 then 3 hours later 5.5

I do not know if you have read these apologies if you have
test-review-adjust. By Alan S .
The idea is to see how high you BG levels go before your levels start to go down, this way you learn which foods causes high spikes which causes damage .

I hadn’t read this and it’s very interesting thank you
