Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi this is all new for me, not the diabetes, I have had type 1 for 26 years as well as other numerous illnesses (to many to list) Have developed retinopathy Sept 2009, this really scares me, the thought that I may lose my sight in the future. Have agreed with my diabetes team to finally go onto four injections a day (reluctantly) to get better control. My control has been o.k upto now, HBA1 about 8.0. I feel very alone struggling with this horrible disease, I feel my worries and concerns about it all including feeling generally unwell all day everyday fall on deaf ears at my diabetes team visits. Does anyone else feel like this?

welcome katie an a nutshell YES !! Im a T2 so cannot comment on insulin regieme but there are plenty on this forum who are who im sure will come in with advice xx in the meantime have a good look around the threads and remember no questions are silly here xxx

Hi Katie,
I get very good and understanding support from the diabetes team that I visit, especially from the DSN. If you feel that you aren't getting the support and information that you need then you could try contacting your local NHS PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Services) as they deal with concerns and complaints regarding the treatment and advice that you receive.
If they have caught your retinopathy early enough and they have referred you to an opthalmologist for treatment then the chances are you will be OK. Especially if you can also improve your diabetes control.
I started having eye problems around 2003/2004 and was diagnosed as having proliferative retinopathy. I have had considerable laser treatment to both eyes and can no longer drive as I have failed the DVLA fields test. The important thing is that my eyes appear to have settled down and I've not had any problems for the last couple of years.
If you've got questions, just shout.
Keith.

Hi Katie and welcome like am i am also type 2 so cant comment on the insulin, i totally understand how you feel about things falling on deaf ears , i have no confidence in my doctor , this place will be a tower of strenth for you , you will not be alone from now on xxxx

Just a quick question.

I know you've been T1 for many years.

Do you know your carbohydrate to insulin ratio? i.e. how many grams of carbs to a unit of fast acting insulin.

I only ask as my friend who has been T1 for 30 years didn't know until recently there was such a thing.

Hi Katie, welcome to the forum.

Hi Katie - welcome to the forum. I felt exactly like you about my care until I told them I wanted to have kids. I would repeatedly tell them how my hba1c was only ok as my levels were either too high or too low and this just about balanced itself out.

I am sure you will get used to the 4 injections - it offers you a lot more flexibility over when and how much you can eat.

So have you been on 2 mixed injections a day for all this time? MDI is no doubt so much better. The carb counting is fine once you get the hang of it and gives you so much more flexibility. My daughter had been dxd for nearly 4 years and her levels have been all over the place. She was on 2 injections a day but recently moved to 3 a day now and are moving to 4 a day in a few weeks. Her levels have already improved.
