One in five people admitted to hospital for angina, stroke, heart attack or heart failure have diabetes, according to a new report published today.

The National Diabetes Audit report, published today by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), reveals that there were 23,986 "excess" deaths in people with diabetes in England and Wales in 2013. This means that they died earlier than would have been expected if compared to people without the condition.

Those with Type 1 diabetes were 131 per cent more likely to die in 2013 than their peers of their age without the condition and those with Type 2 diabetes were 32 per cent more likely to die.

Cheery news :( Particularly shocking is that 800% greater likelihood of minor amputation 😱 When I was diagnosed I spent some time in the Cardiac Care Unit - 8 out of 10 in there had diabetes.

And today they say one in every two people will get cancer.... If one doesn't get you the other will :(

As always, the people who are most likely to suffer from angina, stokes and heart attacks are those with poorly controlled diabetes, who don't exercise and eat appropriately, who don't take medication appropriately [if prescribed]. Those with diabetes who are well controlled are more similar to people who don't have diabetes.

Good point Copepod.

Also, beware of statistics. For example, in the event that 1 'normal' person dies for some reason during the year and 2 people with diabetes die for the same reason then that is a 'shocking' 100% worse outcome for those with diabetes. However, the numbers themselves tell a different story.

Never take such stories at face value.

Andy 🙂
