Hi all!

I hope this finds you all well! Ok, so the past 6-8 months or so, I've really started to suffer with period pains and everything that comes along with it :( I've spoken with my female friends and they all recommend going on the pill, but obviously they can't tell me if that is going to have any affect on my diabetes. So my questions are as follow:

1) Are you on the pill?
2) How does it affect your diabetes, if at all?
3) Generally speaking, would you recommend it?

Thank you!

Vicki 🙂

Best tip I can give anyone regarding contraception is to make an appointment with a GP with a special interest in contraception or family planning clinic doctor, so that you can discuss the full range of contraception available, including newer and lesser known types such as hormone implants and IUCDs.
They will take your diabetes into account, which does change relative suitabilty of some methods over others.

Good luck with finding the best solution for you (and your partner). 🙂

Hi,

I use the micrognon pill as I have very heavy periods and have always suffered with bad pain. My periods aren't as painful as they were before I started taking the pill but I do still suffer so I also take feminax the first couple of days, also my periods don't last as long now I am on the pill they only last 5 days before it would take 7 days before I finished. Being on the pill hasn't affected my diabetes at all. I would definitely recommend it. I hope that has helped 🙂

Hi,

I tried the pill due to very very painful periods. It didnt suit me at all re the diabetes made my bs sky high. GP did say that was unusual - so I am trying the marina coil - so far so good had it fitted 3 months ago and get a little bit of niggling pain, slight periods still and spotting and hopefully within a few more months they will stop.

As Copepod suggested best port of call is you GP.

Hi Vicki - I think you should see the Dr and explain that this is a recent occurrance. I read some while back that pain associated with periods is treated differently if it isn't something you have always had. The Dr may want to check for what is causing the pain.

It is probably nothing but best to get checked out particularly as you plan on going abroad for a while.

Yeah go see your gp or local clinic
i was on the mini pill before i had my daughter but i was pants at taking it that's why we have her lol
I'm

I now have that implant in my arm which lasts 3 years and is okay I don't have regular periods then they last two weeks and are dead heavy but then nothing for months but its different for everyone x

I was on the pill before and during diabetes, then I was sterilised, then I had PMT so went on hormone tablets, then I had fibroids with terribly heavy periods so I tried hormone tablets for that, then I had a hysterectomy and thereafter took HRT.

So I have absolutely no idea what it did to my BG, as I was hardly ever without it.

But I never noticed any difference one way or the other, and haven't since I packed up the HRT either.

YMMV.

Thanks everyone! I've already booked an appointment to see my GP, I just wanted to talk to females who "know" -- a GP can give me facts and stuff, but it's not the same as talking to you all first-hand!

Vicki 🙂

Hi Vicki.

yep. spent 14 years on Microgynon with no problems. In the week when I was on my period, I used to go hypo more and so would reduce my Basal for a few days. In the end I got bored of doing this and so thought I'd try and make it easier for myself by going on one that meant I didn't have a period at all. I've been on this now for a month so unable to say if I've got any problems with it as I need a few more months of results to see any trends.

I would definitely recommend being on a pill...for me, I still had bloating and some pains, but nothing compared to what I experienced before. I also had VERY light periods, which I know I should be lucky for.

Let us know how your appointment goes with your dr, or let us know if you have any more questions 🙂

Hello there!! I was the exact same as you I used to have TERRIBLE cramps etc. I was on the microgynom pill before I was dianosed and after I asked if there were any issues with me being on it whislt having diabetes and they said no. I am back on it now and it is heaven compared to what I used to go through!!

I have been on several pills and haven't noticed any problems - except with the latest pill I was on (Yasmin). My BS was very high whilst on it and a recent gp visit told me that diabetics should never take this particular pill so if you are offered Yasmin I would advise you to say no. Have been given the mini-pill now but decided to wait for a month or two before starting on that one, see how my BS goes 'pill free' for a while.
