A DIAGNOSIS of type 1 diabetes can be a tumultuous event for children, but Eltham's Luke Benness is taking it all in his stride.
The 10-year-old has taken charge of the disease in the six years since he was diagnosed, injecting himself with insulin and carefully monitoring his blood sugar each day.
He still plays sport and is particularly passionate about basketball and his AFL team, Richmond.
He recently met Tiger legend Dale Weightman, who played 250 games with type 1 diabetes as part of the Royal Children's Hospital's Mind over Matter month.
