Well i have just been into work to drop off the equipment and there was a nursing seminar on in another room, i thought i'd ask if there was a DSN there and the lasy i asked was not only a DSN but Diabetic t2 too! bargain. I told what the GP said and she said " oh i wouldn't bother testing, its not what you eat its the amount, just eat less and do tests for hba1c, i said that i had and result was 6.9 so she said oh thats normal, mine was 10...

gob smacked! she is fine to tell people not to test and just eat less, so i can have what i used to have just not as much. she also said that when i get the false hypos it has nothing to do with Diabetes but BP!

Don't know what to say apart from thank god i didnt have her!

Hi Julie....

I truly, have only one word to say to this.......Speechless😱.

EH?!! Don't know much about T2 diab tbh, but that just sounds like the "la la la" ignore it & it will go away approach to me! Wouldn't want to be in her body in a few years time!

Don't give up, there are some good 'uns out there. Maybe have a look at this newfangled NHS choices website thingy? That might give you a pointer to a diabetic centre of excellence near you?

Fingers crossed you get some good help soon!! 🙂

That's awful. My doctor is diabetic and she's of the opinion testing is good if you are prepared to work on the results.

You would have thought a DSN would practice what she preaches. How can they let her loose on patients with such poor control.

Well you won't see her in 10 years time....

...or perhaps I should say....

....she won't be able to see you.

Goodness, how awful, and shocking that she can give out advice!

Keep persevering, there are some very good diabetes specialists out there I promise, it's just a case of getting through these ones!!

Having read this, Im glad we have this forum for sensible no nonsense advice. I know there are a lot of myths around type 2 diabetes, but professionals don't help to dispel them...

And this person cares for diabetics??

I wonder if the senior partner and practice manager know that she spouts such rubbish?

I'd be considering a new practice if this is how their staff care for themselves!

Whilst I am shocked to read the above story about that particular DSN, I kinda think that this is happening more and more and the levels of people's ignorance certainly does not shock me anymore.

If the particular attitude is being directed to her patients then I believe that she is acting without a duty of care and would be harming people through her miss-guidance.

If I were in that situation I would certainly make a full and formal complaint to her bosses and the health authority.. Maybe it would help with her own condition if she were better informed and less ignorant..

Just MHO 🙂

i'd be more than worried if my hba1c was 10... she wasn't bothered at all. most bizarre conversation ive ever had!

She said that she never tests, its a waste of time, but hba1c of 10 i think would mean no control in t2.. i know t1 are higher and don't mean that you don't have control.

So if i just can eat anything in less quantity ill just have half a pack of biscuits then! lol

Can't complain, i don't know who she is or where she works, she was just at a meeting in my building today.

Wish i'd never asked her now! lol, i'll just do it my way and get help from you guys.

I'm guessing, if she's on insulin, that she has 'honed her technique to invisibility'...!😉🙂 She's not from Birkenhead, is she?😱

Hi Julie

Sorry if it sounded that you should go in "all guns blazing".. Easier said than done, especially if it was a one off..

I think you are right though... You have to find the support network that suits you and your diabetes and that "other" life that someone mentioned on the another thread here.

For some they will have access to great DSN's, Doctors and/or other medics, Some I guess will find it through friends and family.

The welcome I received together with the birthday wishes I got on Monday makes me believe that this site/forum would fall into the friends and family section.. 🙂

AND she said that i'd be better off going to the farmacist rather than a dr or dsn! said you get better care! lol

She's probably right where her own patients are concerned, they would no doubt get much better care from the pharmicist than her !!!!!🙂

😱 Sounds exactly like the advice I repeatedly receive from my GP and Nurse (not sure if she is actualy a DSN, as general nurse at dr surgery who does lots of stuff, or just somehow thinks she knows all about diabetes). Odd as it may seem its good to realise its not just me who thinks I am over reacting and thinking advice is a little general.

Thanks Julie for telling us. 🙂

She sounds dangerous! Arent you glad she's not your dsn?😱Bev

Doesn't sound good at all, but I have come across a terrible nurse at my old GP practice.
I wonder if working with people with diabetes you become de-sensitised to high numbers and her 10% doesn't seem too bad to her?
