Is it true that you are not supposed to take medication for gastric reflux for a long time? I suffer from gastric reflux and have recently increased my dosage from 10mg a day to 20mg. I also take statins which I believe I will have to take indefinitely, thought the same was for acid medication although I would hope to eventually go off the Omeprazole when I have lost a few stones in weight.

Hey, over time it can affect you wrongly. I used to be on it as I had my gallbladder removed last year but now I take Aloe Vera gel once a day in liquid form and you can notice a difference within 3 days doses 🙂 x

I've been taking Lanzoprazole (same class of drug) for well over 10 years. I have a small hernia that allows acid to leak into my oesophagus, but not bad enough for surgery. Even after massive weight loss, if I forget my dose I'm suffering by lunchtime. I've had several doctors in the last few years, and none of them has raised an eyebrow.

I'm on 30mg of Lansoprazole, have been for 3 years. They put my dose up to 30mg when I last got anaemic. I have no idea why they did that. I'm still taking 30mg and have no ill effects.......so far😱

Having had a severe gastric ulcer about 20 years ago. A few years after the ulcer healed I started to get symptoms similar to when I had the ulcer diagnosed. After further investigation it was found I had devloped oesophagitis and also a hiatus hernia.

I was put on omeprozole in varying doses (currently 30mg) and have been taking them for the best part of 18yrs without any problems.

I think like a lot of medication it's about the benefits outwaying any potential problems.

PhilT : did you have any tests? i have been suffering from gastric reflux for years now but just recently it is affecting me quite badly, ie hoarseness, a dry tickly cough and am wondering whether i need a test of some sort

Carina, i had to have a Gastroscopy as they had to rule out another ulcer.

I've been on Omeprazole for many years (20mg daily) for gastritis and reflux but a recent gastroscopy showed multiple polyps in my stomach and I was told this could be due to the Omeprazole. I am currently waiting to see my consultant to see what he says and if he is going to change the medication though.

I also take it for gastritis and reflux... maybe there's a weird link with the big D (after all, it's because of it I was diagnosed!)

My Dr's happily given me 6 months worth, but I don't take them all the time... basically only when I have a flare up. But if your worried have a chat with your DR, it's what they are there for.
