I have Omeprazole on repeat prescription for my acid reflux which flares up from time to time. I don't take the medication every day, only when my acid reflux get particularly uncomfortable. Is anyone else on this medication for acid reflux? and do you take it regularly ie every day or just like me when you feel the need to?

My hubby takes it every day or else his reflux flares straight up again.

Yes I take it everyday, and would not be without it. i was prescribed it about three years ago to help tum when taking diclofenic. best medication i take and would not want to be without it. x

I was given it 4 years ago due to being on steroids full time.
The side effects were hidious. To say it made me vomit for England is an understatement 😱 It was touch and go as to whether I was going to end up in hospital.

I was on it after diagnosis, in order to settle my stomach from the effects of the other tablets I was on, but it didn't really work for me - it didn't seem to make any difference when I stopped taking it.

Yes take it every day without fail or would know about it. I didn't think you were supposed to take as and when Carina - I thought you had to take it constantly as it takes time to build up in your system. If you don't need it everyday might be worth a chat with the GP to see if there is anything more suitable?🙂

Carina - the sort of question that a pharmacist is ideally qualified to answer, and will probably make their day, as it's a bit more of a challenge than "not more than 4g paracetamol from any source in 24 hours". If omeprazole doesn't suit you, when taken in way prescribed / recommended by pharmacist, then you'll need to ask GP about prescribing an alternative.

I take it everyday too, if I don't the good old acid reflux springs back...

I also take Omeprazole for acid reflux - I used to take it as and when needed but now take it every day as unfortunately suffer when when I haven't taken it.

I took it for a while, but when I stopped the acid reflux came back. Now I take it everyday.

I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia about 12 years ago and prescribed Lansoprazole to control it, both Omeprazole and Lansoprazole are protein pump inhibitors used in the treatment of peptic ulcers and acid reflux and is usually given in 30g or 15g capsules. At first I was on 30g a day after which it was reduced down to 15g when my condition improved, over recent years I have reduced this myself and take one capsule every two to three days, if I am eating rich foods over a period of days I will resume a 15g dose daily until I go back to my usual diet. Not sure why you have been given Omeprazole, but simple dietary changes can make a hell of a difference if you are experiencing acid reflux.

After reading all your posts i think i should really take it every day, it's only a 10mg tablet but it certainly does help and when i don't take them then my acid reflux comes back with a vengence. A GP i saw ages ago told me he used to take it but after losing a lot of weight he then didn't need to take it anymore, until i get to that stage i think it would be best if i carry on taking it, thanks people 🙂

Very wise to take it each day until such times that you feel better to reduce the dose.🙂

Hubby has it to protect his stomach from the effects of other medications he has for osteoarthritis, he doesn't take either every day.
