I read recently that the RDA for someone who does not eat fish regularly but wants to protect from CHD should have 1000mg a day. I take Omega 3 but only every other day as it is quite expensive the ones I buy but they are 500mg but can't really afford to 'up' my dose as i wouldn't be able to afford them. Does anyone else take Omega 3 and how much do you take? thanks

Hi sorry no answer from me but I'd be very interested to find out as well!

I don't take any supplements, but I do try to have some sardines on toast or salmon sandwiches a couple of times a week. Also, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli have omega 3, also walnuts, so there are lots of other places besides fish that can provide you with the recommended amounts.

I was wondering if the vegetarians and vegans amongst us would like to volunteer what they do to ensure they are getting enough omega 3. I know you can buy bags of seed which say they are omega 3 rich which you can sprinkle on salads or add to muesli.

Some margarines have Omega 3,
other sources: leafy green veg, nuts and avocado , olive oil and Linseed . all have Omega 3. Also Rapeseed oil and Hempseed oil has it too

This is the way I get my Omega 3.

I get mine through rapeseed oil, sardines on toast twice a week and also salmon once a week..

Steffie be careful of your salmon consumption. Check this link as salmon is well known go contain Mercury.

http://www.env-health.org/IMG/pdf/Fish_consumption.pdf

I was interested to read that, on the Lewis and Clarke expedition to find the Northwest Passage in the early 19thC, they consumed so much mercury that their 'toilet stops' are still contaminated to this day! Apparently, it was the height of medical knowledge that if you were ill then you consumed mercury which would make you vomit and give you severe diarrhea 😱 (Book was brilliant and a real eye-opener - review here: http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=16316 )

Nowadays we worry about trace amounts and consider it highly toxic!

I think that there are only a few species of fish eaten in the UK with high levels of mercury
.
Mercury concentrations in UK farmed salmon and trout were relatively low. The maximum concentration found in 46 samples of fresh/frozen or smoked trout and salmon was 0.1 mg/kg. The levels of mercury in all samples of shellfish, trout and salmon and canned and processed fish were within the regulatory limit for the relevant species.
http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/fsis40_2003.pdf Government advice is :

Pregnant and breast-feeding women, and women who intend to become
pregnant, should limit their consumption of tuna to no more than two medium
size cans or one fresh tuna steak per week.
? These women are also advised to avoid eating shark, swordfish and marlin.
? Children under 16 are also advised to avoid eating shark, swordfish and marlin

As for omega 3, there's a very good list of foods here :list towards bottom of page http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=84

I dread to think then how much the Iniut people consume , as they live entirely on fish and seal meat.

Interesting on that list is soya beans. didnt realise they had Omega 3. In my diet I think I consume a good amount of Omega 3.

My cousin in France has walnut tree's and he gives me loads of them when he comes over. They taste so much fresher. lovely.

I saw the dietician a few months ago to discuss how best to manage my cholesterol levels since my stroke. She said that omega 3 has a good effect on them and recommended 1000mg a day. I get mine from Sainsbury's and they occasionally have special offers. After Christmas it was half price so we bought 6 months supply. Keep your eyes peeled for similar offers in Supermarkets or maybe buy online? She said that obviously it's good to get it from other sources but if you want to be absolutely sure you are getting the full amount every day then supplements are the way to go.

I have a major objection to rapeseed oil and won't use it at all, the stuff's deadly when it sets seed if you're at all asthmatic. I do however, eat shell fish, at least once a week and have trout or salmon around once a week as well. There's Omega 3 in the vitamin supplement I use and I have a few walnuts no and again, but not too often as I tend to react to them a little.

See your doctor Flutterby and ask for Omacor on prescription, this is often given to patients with previous heart and stroke problems and is a high strength formula Omega 3.

Just bought 9 bar made by this company.

www.9-bar.co.uk. Its a 9 bar original containing carob topped mixed seed with hemp and full of omega 3 and 6.

Carbs per bar: 14.6g of which sugars 13.1
omega 3 fatty acids 0.3g
omega 6 fatty acid 6.4g

also very tasty.

You can get Omega 3 capsules with flax seed. Would have thought that was preferable these days, I'm concerned at the number of cod being slaughtered to make Cod liver oil (made from the whole fish as part of the fish meal process I believe). Kill plants I say and fry the cod.

Toby I only just saw your reply, thanks I will ask about that when I see him next.
