Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi hello!

41 year old T2 newbie looking to become a first time mum!!!

I'm searching out anyone who has experience in this area. Or who is going through or considering going through it.

There's so much info and support for diabetic women looking to get pregnant but I can't find anything for older ladies like me!

I just want someone to talk to!

Xxx

Hello and welcome to the forum.
This is outside of my experience, as I am in the 'grandparent' phase of life, but hopefully there will be someone on the forum that has some knowledge that will be helpful to you.
Have you had type 2 for very long, and how are you controlling it? I am guessing that having good initial control is going to be a helpful first step.

Hi Josstick, welcome to the forum. Not much diabetic advice, I'm afraid, as all this was long before D, but I had my third baby at 41, with no issues, and I am now a proud granny of my daughter's 8 month old baby girl 🙂 ...actually I had more trouble with my first daughter, born when I was almost 31, and my son born when I was 38.

Every pregnancy is different and I wish you all the best :D

I had gestational diabetes for both my pregnancies (at 30 and 32 years old), prediabetic now. I'm not going to lie being diabetic and pregnant is hard, but it It is not the worse complication in pregnancy. You can have some level of control. There is bonuses, lots of scans to monitor baby being the main. Obviously type 2 is different to gestational diabetes. In pregnancy your insulin resistance increases and the amount of insulin you need increases. This is the same for all women. You could look at being diabetic pre pregnancy as a bonus, you know what your doing.

Welcome to the forum @Josstick

How long have you been diagnosed, and how are you currently managing your diabetes?

The main challenge in pregnancy I’ve seen as far as T1 mums are concerned is the extremely tight targets that are set for glucose management, particularity for high blood glucose, which can have a negative effect on the developing baby. Various cycles of hormones and insulin sensitivity seem to play havoc with glucose levels when you are dosing your own insulin... but I confess it’s not so often something I see being discussed from a T2 perspective, though we do have one member @merrymunky whose pregnancy is currently progressing at speed!

I can see you’ve already found the pregnancy board - hope you get some useful pointers and information from the mums there.
