I am trying to lose weight (again) and at present on 14u insulin morning and 14 evening. Novamix 30

Yesterday brekkie : large bowl of bran flakes/soya milk . At 10.45 I felt jittery bg 3.8 had one slice of bread and low sugar marmalade. Lunch: small jacket potato/hummus/salad.

pre-tea : BG 11.4 14u insulin. Tea 6 crackers/hummus and 5 rich tea biscuits. Fruit

This morning : fasting BG 9 . 14 u insulin Brekkie large bowl of bran flakes/soya milk. One slice of gran,bread/marg/marmite.

This brekkie seems to last till 11ish then I get jittery and bg is usually around 5.

MY DSN is letting me juggle with my insulin as I want to lose weight.
So I am considering giving me 13u pre brekkie and still to 14 evening.
With intention of reducing my insulin as I lose weight. Am I doing the right thing?.

It's difficult for me to advise as I've never used this regime. I think I would find it very difficult to manage, and by the looks of it if you reduce your morning insulin the high levels before dinner are going to get worse, unless you reduce carbs.

For me losing weight has been mainly about reducing carbs. I would ditch the bran flakes and go for something lower carb and lower GI, but that would mean making major adjustments to your insulin dose. Have you considered changing to a basal-bolus regime, as this allows you to control your background and mealtime insulins separately?

Maybe an idea. I lost a good amount of weight last year on a low carb/fat diet and thats what I am trying out now, hence small potatoes etc,.

I will continue to juggle the insulin till I next see the DSN.

The problem with a mixed insulin taken twice a day is that you can end up eating to your insulin. It is also less flexible in that you tend to need regimented snacks and meals. A basal bolus would give you more flexibility as to when and what you can eat - including having different sized meals each day.

I would talk it over with your DSN.

Remember as well that although your pre-tea is high - you will have both your lunch and any snacks contributing to that value. If you do as you are suggesting you may find that you don't need your snack and the evening values also improve. Not saying it will and I would talk it over with your DSN first before making any changes.
