Reading posts here about jumbo oats, I tried looking for them. Couldn't find any, but I bought some plain porridge from our small Tesco (just oat flakes, nothing else added).

Before breakfast this morning I was 5.5; one hour after a small bowl of porridge with semi skimmed milk I was 8.2; two hours later (just now!) I was back to 5.5! Result - a happy Pine Marten who will be going back to porridge now and then 🙂

I haven't tried porridge, but muesli (which I made myself) sends me sky high.:(

That's great news 🙂 Oats are supposed to be helpful for your cholesterol levels also 🙂

I wonder how many Muggles happily tuck into their 'healthy' Alpen without realising how much sugar and other carbs are in it? I certainly used to! 😱 When I was diagnosed I was recommended Weetabix as a suitable breakfast. I was pelased, because I like them, but once I got testing for spikes I realised they were very bad news! 😱 Unfortunately, I've heard on here many times of people being recommended Weetabix as a good choice :(

What about Shredded Wheat?

When I was diagnosed I was told 3 "safe" breakfast cereals, porridge, weetabix and shredded wheat. Only porridge and shredded wheat is kind to my BG levels. Porridge tends to bring it down a bit and shredded wheat raises it by about 1-2 mmol/L.

I haven't tried Shredded Wheat or Weetabix but I did like Quaker Qats and Alpen - but they both spiked :(. Still, this plain Tesco porridge seems fine, and I'll try it with almond milk maybe, to see if it makes a difference.

I'll also look in our bigger supermarkets for jumbo oats (this Tesco is weeny), but it certainly makes a change from mushrooms/eggs/bacon/tomatoes!

We have a weeny Tesco too. I might try the jumbo oats if i can find them.

After porridge which I love my blood sugar spiked to 18 after shredded wheat it spiked to 17. They are no go for me. I love them too. I was told to eat any of those and for 12 years I did until I got a tester last week as my blood sugar was out of control.

Anyone got any feedback about oatabix?

Have you considered eating porridge at different times of the day? Might feel a bit odd, but if you love it you might find that you tolerate it better later in the day when you may be less insulin-resistant 🙂

Personally I don't want breakfast, ever. I never have. When I was little my mom used to put it in front of me so I ate it. Otherwise you'd have to speak. Not on. In my teens being as there was only me living where we lived and it was half an hour on the bus to school, I skipped it and I'd have come round by the time I got there. Ditto work. Later still - I drove to work (min 17 miles) and would never have any recollection of the drive, once I'd arrived. I was informed that this must mean I must have done things right, otherwise there would have been obtrusive noises - cars crashing, brakes screeching, horns blaring - those sorts of things. It is true that when anything of that sort had happened (NB hardly ever anything I'd done to cause it - I mean generally) then I would remember it and recount the tale about the knobheads on the other side of the dual carriageway LOL

However - back On Topic - if I don't have something first thing then my BG is haywire all day. I am NOT a morning person whatsoever and cannot be bothered to do eggs or anything else on the basis if I'm not going to enjoy them, why bother? I couldn't eat eg cheese or ham first thing, instant heartburn. On holiday where you've been up for a while and had enough time and cups of tea to get your head round this whole alien 'being awake' concept (which is the tricky part) and then someone offers you a brekkie where you can just sit and be waited on, is completely different.

Anyway .... I find that one Weetabix with hot milk* (microwaved in the dish then the Weetabix added) slips down without much effort at all and fits in with my life without any thinking or other stuff involving my brain, needing to be done. It's difficult enough assembling the tablets I need at that time of day! Doesn't taste of anything, doesn't have to be chewed, just completely - well - nothing! - so eminently suitable for me.

* with cold milk, the cereal retains texture - even crunch. How horrific.

Every 6 months or so when I get up and for some reason I actually feel awake, I have food for brekkie and enjoy it!

My breakfast for the past 4 or 5 years has almost exclusively consisted of a slice of Burgen toast. Prior to diagnosis, hardly ever had breakfast, although sometimes went for what we laughingly called a 'working breakfast' in the canteen at work! 🙂

I skipped breakfast a lot. But always popped out for a sausage and bacon bap at the weekend:D.

I'd be very leery of any 'processed' cereal whether Weetabix or any other sort, I had terrible trouble with Weetabix when first diagnosed. I now use Scots oats (crushed rather than steel cut) and find I can count on my numbers staying pretty much within tolerance and not feel hungry till lunch.

Lizis Granola +/or burgen toast for me. The granola is quite expensive but it treats me kindly. Oh yes and I have it with unsweetened almond milk.

Breakfast seems to be the one meal of the day that my body doesn't react badly to and fortunately I love my breakfast. 🙂

Dont do breakfast. Never have. Don't need it. Don't get hungry. Its seems to be an amazingly difficult concept to get across to people, but I'm not hungry when I get up. I'm awake, and fully compos mentis, but I don't like mornings. I quite happily go from getting up to lunchtime without eating anything, and my bgs are fine with that. I also have minimal lunch without problem. I'm of the opinion that my digestion doesn't really start until mid afternoon. As long as I have drinks (tea, coffee, water, etc) I work perfectly well without no food until that point. Just proves, everyone's different!
