Just need a bit of help on my dilemma with the office Christmas lunch.

I am on Humalin 3 injections morning and tea time.

Our office Christmas lunch is scheduled for 1pm Christmas Eve - My concern is that do I take my tea time injection at lunch time to tackle the 3 course Christmas meal and then not take it at tea time which will be a light tea.

Or do I just take the insulin as normal.

Or do I for go the meal altogether which I'm quite happy to do if needs be.

My wife wants me to go out Christmas Eve for a few drinks then of course there is another Christmas day feast to tackle - although closer to tea time so that's not really an issue.

I just don't want to over do it with this being my first Christmas on insulin.

Thanks

This is one of the significant drawbacks with mixed insulins - they just don’t cope well with variations in routine. MDI is much more flexible and you can vary doses based on meal sizes.

is there an opportunity to ask your GP about it - perhaps over a phone appointment?

Im not sure anyone will be able to offer much in the way of advice unfortunately, as everyone is so different.

mixed insulins cover both background and meal requirements, and really aren’t geared-up for a big carb load at lunchtime.

Humulin M3 is supposed to be taken approx 20-45 mins before eating, has a peak of activity up to 8 hours after injecting and then tails off up to approx 20 hours.

I think if you take your evening dose early, the risk is that you would overlap the previous dose more, and then it will run out a littler earlier than normal so give less available insulin overnight.

I’m not sure if anyone here has ever split their evening dose to take part of it a little earlier, but that would also carry unpredictable risks.

you might just be better off trying to choose fairly low carb options for the lunch?

either way you’ll certainly want to check a little more often after your evening meal to keep an eye on things

Cheers Mike,

I think I have managed to avoid the meal - our manager suggested I miss the starter and sweet and just have meat and veg but I might as well just forgo it and work instead.

seems a shame that your missing out :( I echo Mikes comments about changing to a basal/bolus regime as I suggested that months ago to you, your waking levels are still on the high side and would be by far easier to control on a basal/bolus regime and I'm not meaning that in a cheeky way xx

Hi Kaylz,

Yes I remember you mentioning the basal/bolus regime a while ago. My DSN has discharged me back to the surgery before I got chance to see her about it but I will mention it at my next review.

I didn't take it as cheeky 😉😉
