Counting calories does more harm than good, experts warn today.

In a damning analysis of decades of dietary advice, doctors say we have been misled about the best way to stay healthy.

We should focus on the content of our food, rather than how much of it we eat, say cardiologists, and we need to lose our fear of fats – some of which can be good for us.

The experts, writing in the BMJ journal Open Heart today, say that existing advice has been so bad that it has contributed to Britain’s obesity crisis.

At last! It's permanent, achievable lifestyle changes that we should focus on. Diets don't work - I was on a diet for 10 years, my weight yo-yoed constantly, and I was miserable. It was only once I'd stopped dieting that my weight stabilised...and I was able to get on with my life! Rant over.🙄
 
Shape Your Wait is leaning in this direction. They say they're not a diet, not do the calories, you can have some fats & oils and avoid say "this is bad and you can't have it". Although they'd prefer if you didn't have all the pastry and loads of butter.
On the one I did the asked people to list diets they new. Got quite a list.
Asked if any one had tried any. Lots, mostly at least 2, several 3 or more, with repeated visits to the same one common.
"Do they work?"
"Yes!"
"No. If they did you wouldn't be here."

There was a cardiologist on the BBC Breakfast show this morning, saying exactly this, and I said to my husband that I bet it will be on the forums later today...:D

At last - some sensible advice...
 
...although when a diabetic man was shown on some programme (?news) last night making his own meal cos he has a different cupboard load of food from the rest of his family, he was making a sandwich with white sliced bread! Hmmm...

Oh dear! The thing is though, that they don't really need to have different cupboards - a diet that is healthy for good blood sugar control is a diet that is healthy for everyone! 🙂 I think this is one of the great muggle myths about diabetes, and why there is still a market for 'diabetic' jam! 🙄

I hadn't even considered diabetic products, or new they still existed. Only one I remember seeing is jam, and not that for decades.

a diet that is healthy for good blood sugar control is a diet that is healthy for everyone!
I thought we were supposed to be doing minimal carbs and not eating fruit, particularly bananas (don't remember the others on the list).
Or is everybody else supposed to be doing that too?

P.S. Don't know what happened to that quote.
