Not exercising enough can be as deadly as smoking, according to new research - and Britons are some of the worst offenders.
Figures show the UK has one of the world's least physically active populations, with just over 63 per cent failing to meet recommended levels of physical activity.
The finding is based on a series of research papers, which also warn inactivity now causes as many deaths worldwide as smoking or obesity.
The Lancet medical journal has published several studies underlining the risks of not exercising.
Another by doctors at Harvard Medical School warns that 5.3 million people died in 2008 because they did less activity than recommended.
