A LEADING expert on obesity, which is said to cost Britain around ?5bn a year, has called for "an end to prejudice" to help tackle the epidemic.

A report from the Royal College of Physicians is demanding that the NHS shapes up its "patchy and inadequate" approach to fighting the country's bulging waistlines.

County bariatric (weight-loss) surgeon Richard Welbourn, based at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital, a leading centre on obesity, is backing the report.

He says: "There are many excellent colleagues up and down the region who are trying to develop services."

It would be a good attitude if it wasn't for the fact that it was said by a bariatric surgeon suggesting more people receive bariatric surgery! 🙄
