Why can't I tolerate oats in any form. I have eaten them all my life. Porridge spiked my sugars to 17.5 after 2 hrs this morning!!! Eeek! I had to stop testing so often as I was spiking my anxiety which led to a crisis. Ok now but I love my cereal and fruit in mornings

Oats do that to me too and I mostly gave up on them but I do have a tiny sprinkle of nutty granola on my yoghurt and berries and mixed seeds most mornings and I can manage that but it is just about a dessert spoon... about 5-8g. Enough to give my breakfast some texture/crunch but not contribute any appreciable carbs.... probably 3-4g carbs and my yoghurt contributes about 5g carbs and my berries about another 5g carbs.

If you really want to continue with oats/porridge, then portion size will be key and finding other things to bulk out your porridge that are lower carb. Oat bran is slightly lower carb than whole oats, so might be worth experimenting with to make porridge and it is really good for you. Some people make a type of porridge with ground almonds and psyllium husk and a tiny amount of oats or oat bran.

What are you mixing the oats with? Try adding more fat, and reducing the quantity of oats a bit.

Like you @snowball12 i had eaten porridge for years but when I got a sensor for the first time I saw how big the post meal spikes were. No idea why but I now avoid oats apart a tiny bit of flapjack now and then. We are all different.
I switched to making my own cereal from quinoa flakes, which I roast, with nuts and seeds added.

I’m another one who can’t tolerate oats at all, even though I use insulin. Like @SB2015 I only realised what they were doing to me when I started using a Libre eight years ago. I was shooting up from about 6 before breakfast to 16 after half an hour of finishing. No wonder my legs felt like lead when I was walking to work! I avoid all cereal now and have high protein breakfasts with a small slice of toast, I couldn’t actually imagine having cereal again, although when my husband is making porridge for himself I do occasionally feel wistful as I eat yet another egg!

Thanks for advice. Unfortunately I can't tolerate seeds, berries, nuts or granola due to IBS. Will try oatbran though.

I know the feeling. I can't cope with another egg right now!!!! Even feeding my 10 month old granddaughter with her favourite boiled egg and soldiers is difficult

I find I can tolerate oats - around 30g usually with some yoghurt.
I cut them out completely at diagnosis, but reintroduced them when testing showed they had little effect (Although I have them with Greek yoghurt, Chia Seeds, nuts and berries, which I notice is not an option for you.)

Just unsweetened soya milk as lactose intolerant. What fat do you suggest?
Whatever fats you like, bit of nuts mixed in or whatever you fancy

I can never get enough of eggs. I could eat them breakfast dinner and tea! 🙂 Do luv oats but if they don't suit you then saylavee. There's nowt we can do. 🙄 Sucks basically.

"What you can't alter must be endured" is a quote by Robert Jordan. Similar quotes include:
  • What cannot be cured must be endured
This quote appears in Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy and Ruhul Kader's Aleph. Some say it can mean to endure tragedy, persevere, or not give up. Others say it's an exhortation to be patient when something can't be fixed.

I have been known to stir in a tablespoon of almond or cashew nut butter along with some frozen berries when making proper porridge on the hob (I'm also guilty of eating Oatso Simple when I'm in a rush, but I try to stick to the no added sugar strawberry ones as I can't stand the original ones).
