When I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I was just told to lose some weight and have my bloods rechecked in 3 to 6 months, I have had an appointment for eye screening which I have had to google why, I’ve not been put on any meds my blood level was 53, should I be seeing a nurser or a dietitian? Are there any other appointments I need?

Management of type two is very much what your practice decides is right - some do a lot others don't seem to care, quite at random.

Wendy you were sent a leaflet with the appointment for the retinal screening weren't you?

When were you diagnosed?
Has the nurse checked your feet?

Hi. You should expect to have a review and blood test in 6 months or perhaps 3 months. Call the surgery and ask when they expect to do a review. You will need to setup a review with the diabetes nurse and arrange a blood test around 1-2 weeks before the review. Get a blood glucose meter if you don't have one. Get yourself onto the surgeries online system with access to test results. Personally I would avoid a dietician as so many haven't a clue. The advice on the this forum is all you need i.e. LCHF. What do you mean by 'Googling' for eye screening? You should be sent an appointment within a year.

ie going to the website on the appointment letter to find out what it was all about, as nobody had bothered mentioning anything about such things to Wendy.

Hi . Initially you should have the Hb1ac blood test every three or six months .
Their are other checks you should be having annually
Here is a link to them
Unfortunately due to this pandemic things have gone a bit awry , but it does seem to me that you have been left to flounder and this is just not good enough, so I would be contacting your diabetes nurse if I were you.

With an Hb1ac of 53 because you are really just over the diabetes threshold (48) , it’s likely your nurse is hoping that you can control it by making lifestyle changes first .

Did you see the nurse at the doctor's surgery after you'd first been told you had diabetes, Wendy - or what?

Sorry to hear you’ve not had much in the way of support Wendy :(

It’s a difficult time and the healthcare system is very stretched, and many of the ‘normal’ appointments you might have had are not happening as a matter of routine unfortunately.

If you’d like an overview of T2 diabetes, many members have found Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker a very helpful book.

Alternatively you could gradually work through Maggie Davey’s letter to the newly diagnosed.

I have not seen a nurse, I have an appointment for eye screening and have got to have my Hb1ac bloods repeated between 3 and 6 months after my test, I’m learning loads on here though
