Just wondered if anyone has ever requested to change nurse specialists? Ive been diagnosed for just over a month now, so its still all so new to me. Unfortunately ive got a chest infection at minute and my sugars have been 15-20 over past few days before all meals except breakfast. My nurse had never discussed sick days with me so i phoned her to be given very little advice. Ive never found her very helpful from the start! My GP was more helpful!

However, ive just been to a 2 hour carb counting session run by a different nurse and my dietician. It was brilliant and the nurse went through sick days with me. I was shocked to learn i should be testing my ketones and increasing my doses accordingly. I have no urine testing sticks so she gave me letter for my GP.

I am now worried as I have been running high sugars since fri and had only just got them down to a reasonable level as so newly diagnosed. I know i may sound a little stressed but im so newly diagnosed and feel im not getting the right support from my nurse.

sounds like exactly my situation - i changed hospitals and my new team are mum better! My main contact is now my dietician who is amazing! I even email her all my questions and copies of my diary to get her advice.

The previous one was never available and always seemed rushed when i did get hold of her. Im so much happier, even though im having loads of trouble with my levels i feel i the medical support i should have!

Shop about if you arent happy! :D

I just feel so lucky with the DB team I have. Sorry to hear you don't get the same same professional support.
Check around for alternatives, but you may be stuck with them. Maybe tell your GP about the problem and ask for help?
Good luck

I am not on insulin but the pack of leaflets that my nurse gave me when first diagnosed had a leaflet on sick days.
I have found illnes can push my sugars up and down. Also some drugs can push sugars up too.

Being ill can push my sugars up as well. When I was first diagnosed I asked the practice nurse all kinds of questions only to be told we'll deal with that when it comes up.

Now when I am not well I make an appointment to see the doctor, and if I am no better at the end of the week I go again. With my doctors practice/surgery I have to be pesistent to get anything.

It's not always easy, but where possible try to eat as normally as you can and don't stop taking your medication. Ask for medical adice and if necessary be persistent.

The sugar levels will come down, mine were up in the air when I was feeling the pits and are now more stable.

If the nurses are part of the same team i don't see the problem with switching to the other. it may be that they are allocated by area or might have just been random who you were allocated to.
If the nurse you liked is part of another hospital/community team then you might have to transfer your care to the other team.

I'm very lucky that my DSN is amazing and part of the reason i haven't transferred my care since I moved away.
