Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all new to forum can any one give me advice please I am 49 and have type 2 was diagnosed in 2010 I have been back to the doctors now 16 times firstly to report a problem with numbness in my right foot on the right hand side of my foot and since 1st noticed it (Aug 2010) it has steadily got worse now it is up my leg and calf up to the cheek of my bott, eventualy persuaded my doc to take it further which was a mri scan only because of a back problem (damage to facit joints). The consultant looked at the photos and said that the foot and leg problem was not down to the back problem and I was to inform the doc that he thought it was down to my diabetes I have had the feet check screening and mensioned it to them and they said every thing was fine and I was newly diagnosed with type 2 so that cannot be the problem again back to the docs between work ect (self employed) but to no avail doc is now at a wall with it he says and does not know what to try next and says he is going to try and refer me back to the hospital this has now been going on over 16 months and I am now worried that this can be nerve problems due to my diabetes and could maybe have been fixed if found earlier can anyone advise please or has anyone been in the same boat?I feel that all this is getting me down as well as my diabetes could the medication be causing this problem does anyone know? Feel like hoying all the tablets in the bin and going without.
40mg glicazide and 2 x 500mg metformin per day.
Sorry for the long thread please can anyone advise ?
many thanks Richie.

Hi Richie,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've been having. I've only been recently diagnosed myself so can't really help but hopefully someone else will be along soon. 🙂

Hello Richie and welcome to the forums.

I am sorry that you are having problems getting to the root of the numbness. I would have expected the back consultant to have put his thoughts in writing to your GP. If not perhaps the GP could call the consultant and see what he suggests. He might have a specialist in mind that he thought you would be referred to.

I don't know who checked your feet but maybe see if you can see a chiropodist/podiatrist who may be more able to pinpoint where the problem is.

I could be wrong here but I remember reading a long time ago that people who develop type 2 diabetes slowly can already have some complications when diagnosed. It doesn't happen to everyone but it is a possibility.

I hope that you manage to get some answers from the Drs.

Hi Richie, welcome to the forum.

I was / am in the same boat as you. My diabetes was diagnosed when I went to the doctors with numb and sore feet and ankles. After about three months I was sent for a EMG (electromyograph) at a local hospital. This unfortunately confirmed that I had sensory neuropathy consistent with diabetes. Maybe you should ask your doctor if you can have one of these, at least it will confirm whether it is nerve damage or not. That way you will know how to deal with it if neccessary. I think it is the not knowing and confusing information bit that annoys me most about this D thing.
