Relationship to Diabetes

Back in November i got a bad case of sciatica that left me in very bad pain, after a week the pain went and left my leg numb, it got better to some extent but my toes and calf are still numb. I have visited the doctors a few time and he just keeps giving me tablets, last week i went back and now he says its down to my diabetes and with better control it will get better with in 6 months. Now my last HBA1C was 6.7 but before that it was in the 9's.
I know it can affect your toes with bad control, butlf as well. Why do i feel like this is bull!!!!

Sounds as if you have a lazy GP who has decided it's your diabetes.
You need to explain to your GP that "it's your diabetes" is not in the medical dictionary.
Not to sure how true this is but was told many years ago if it is diabetes nerve damage in your feet then both feet would be affected.

The other thing i have noticed is when doing my pre exercise strechers, my right leg hamstring is imposable to do. Any one else out here either with sciatica or nimb feet that has symptoms like mine?? As i am thinking of going back to the GP and demanding that somthing be done.

You might be better off finding a good physiotherapist. I was fortunate to have a brilliant one recommended to me when I was recovering from my broken femur. GPs and a lot of hospital physios aren't that used to dealing with people who want to overcome injuries/problems so they can participate in sports as a lot of the time they are working with elderly people and basic movement.

well it does sound like Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy. What do your big toes feel like, any loss of sensation there ? Have you had your feet tested with a Tuning Fork or a Neurothesiometer ?
Diabetes can also cause skin tightening and shiny skin in the lower legs.
Your thigh problems could also be diabetes related - diabetic paresthesia.

I wish I could find out about toes too. I've said before - I have exactly half of one big toe numb. OK I've been D over 40 years but why is it only half of the toe and only one toe?

Docs ALL say it's D.

I say it's where I dropped the grillpan on it.

Docs couldn't care less.

I could.

I find it realy strange there are no tests they can do to find out what's happened to the nerve(s)

my son had lots of trouble over the years with feet mainly due to footy! Hamstring trouble etc the docs didnt have a clue we have seen a podiatrist for quite a few years{ we go once a year now} This bloke has worked with the royal ballet etc TW He is based in Birmingham if you want me to PM his details let me know -he does know his stuff

Thanks, but its a bit far for me to travel, i'll see if i can find some one local first.

LOL Megga, think delbt probably meant that for me! (TW....)

Yes please!

Numbness in feet

Sciatica can give you numbness in your feet as I have only 75% feeling after having major surgery on my spine and before operation numbness so bad using a wheelchair. I was told that I would never get full feeling back and that was even before diabetes. I have permanent sciatica and when really bad one foot or both will still go completely numb. Diabetic sister always checks my feet very carefully to make sure no diabetic problems🙂http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/images/icons/icon7.gif

I know the feeling (or lack of it)

I ruptured a disc in my spine about eight years ago and had sciatica on my left leg - THE most painful thing I've ever had - now I've got half a numb big toe on that side and I still take one diclofenac every day to stave off the back pain and stiffness.

One exercise I've found to be very beneficial though is press-ups, 50 of them every morning done as fast as possible. This seems to strengthen the right muscle group to keep the spine in good shape. It may not work for everyone with back problems though 😉

I had herd that Diclofenac increses the chance of heart problems 4 fold (was on Radio 2 the other day)

Quite true megga - I'm happy(ish) to take the risk on a low dose for the relief I get from it.

For anyone taking diclofenac, it's worth asking the pharmacist to look at the list of other drugs you take regularly. Certain medicines increase the heart risk dramatically when taken with diclofenac (can't remember which ones, sorry). When I was prescribed a short course many years ago, the pharmacist rang my GP to check that it was appropriate to dispense it given the blood pressure meds I was taking at the time. I find it quite disturbing that (a) it's available over the counter and (b) it's being advertised on TV.

Agree LeeLee, seems a bit dangerous to allow it without prescription given the potential for serious side effects. That said, I don't think its any more dangerous than aspirin and as far as cardiac risk goes Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation said, "However, the increased risk is small, and many patients with chronic debilitating pain may well feel that this small risk is worth taking to relieve their symptoms"

That'll be me then 🙂
