Hi

Can anyone advice me as the best way to deal with the norovirus bug as I have now been very sick and pooing for the entire world, i am concerned about taking my oral medication...

At present all I am taking in is plain water and my bm is 4.7 I am concerned that if I don't eat anything this will drop some what and I will have other problems to deal with....

Any advice appreciated....

Philipo

Hi Philipo. Welcome 🙂

I presume you mean Norovirus ?

As a Type 2, providing you're not taking any other blood glucose lowering meds and are unable to eat, then you should be safe to stop taking your metformin I would have thought, but you'd need to ask your doctor or NHS direct.

In the absence of any other meds, your blood glucose shouldn't go below about 3.6 or so because your pancreas will be able to regulate it with your liver's glucose output.

It's important to keep drinking plenty of fluids and take rehydration treatments to replace lost electrolytes, if it's been going on for some time.

Welcome Philipo

Without knowing more about your situation, it's impossible to give medical advice, and anyway, most people on this site are not health professionals. So, definitely best to phone your GP out of hours service (usually phoning your GP surgery when they're not open will give you the phone number) or

NHS Direct (assuming you're in England) website http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/ tel 0845 4647 .

If you're in Scotland, service is NHS 24 - tel 0845 24 24 24 or http://www.nhs24.com .

If you're in Wales, NHS Direct Wales / Galw Iechyd Cymru is on 0845 4647, website http://www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/

Even if you can't eat, keep sipping fluids, plain water, plus anything else you can tolerate eg soup, yogurt, electrolyte drinks etc and continue to monitor your blood glucose levels.
