Novorapid and Dexcom One Plus

My care nurse has finally agreed to let me start with Novorapid, but does that mean I continue with my normal slow-release insulin Toujeo every morning? I need to get advice first, before proceeding. Can anyone please advise me?
My care nurse has also approved of the Dexcom One Plus starting very soon, too. Any thoughts?
I'm not at all incredibly happy with Royal Mail. My all-important new PVC Licence has been lost in the post after the DVLA confirmed it was sent last Friday, May 9th. It should have arrived today! ARRRRRRGGGHHHH!!! Of course, I can't drive any coach until I have it. It's very frustrating, as I have three different employers, all of whom would like me to start!

How frustrating for you but it might not be a bad thing to allow you time to become accustomed to a new insulin regime which may take a bit of tweaking to get your dose of basal insulin right now you will be adding bolus insulin for your meals.
Hopefully you will have been given some guidance about a starting dose.

Hi @Busdriver60 You need advice from your nurse. Yes, you’d still take your Toujeo but you might well need a reduced dose now you have the Novorapid. Your nurse should have advised you about this. If your surgery isn’t open tomorrow, give them a call on Monday.

Have you been given advice about your Novorapid doses?

How do you know it’s been lost? You’ve not even given it any extra days to arrive if you only expected it to arrive today, maybe it will arrive in the next few days. A week is nothing to the post.

Sorry to hear about your license going missing in the post @Busdriver60 - what an absolute nightmare for you!

But yes I’d very much expect you to have to continue to take your toujeo alongside the NovoRapid. Though as @Inka suggests you may need to have a period of adjustment.

On basal-only you are taking a long-acting insulin to help out the flagging beta cells, and intending that the pancreas will be able to keep things pootling along with a bit of additional help.

With rapid acting and background insulin together you have essentially a total insulin replacement system. The basal (background, long acting) insulin is taken to deal with the glucose trickled out by the liver 24/7 - mostly you’d take the same basal dose each day. Additionally the bolus (mealtime, fast acting) insulin is taken and the dose adjusted to deal with each meal to process the carbohydrates eaten.

If your body still has a remnant of insulin production, you may find that your home-grown insulin helps to take the edges off your calculations, and smooths things out - though it may also add a little unpredictability as some T1s find in the “honeymoon” phase soon after diagnosis.

Hopefully your nurse / GP will be able to give you some relatively cautious doses to start with, and you can find your feet without having to sorry about hypos

@Busdriver60 have been advised to take 2 units of Novorapid before every meal. He isn't sure about that for breakfast as he takes Toujeo first thing every morning.

The two insulins are intended to cover different things @GracefulAng

When I was on pens, I took my 24 hour basal in the morning, and also needed to take a dose to cover breakfast. 🙂

Furthermore, @Busdriver60 received update from his diabetes nurse regarding investigation on first serious hypo back in April. She couldn't find out why!

The DVLA said it should have arrived today

Did they say they’d sent it guaranteed to arrive today or that it should arrive today. Should is not a guaranteed postage method.

If you check the dictionary for should it will tell you that it means something is probable not that something is guaranteed, so I think you’re misunderstanding what they meant and panicking it’s been lost unnecessarily

The DVLA told me if it had not arrived by yesterday (Friday) , then I should consider it lost and contact DVLA again to have it resent. Unfortunately, Royal Mail do not consider second class post as a priority. As it happened, I went to my Royal Mail sorting office and actually picked it up there. It was pure potluck. I was trying to explain my frustration last night, that's all.

I took potluck and went to the Royal Mail sorting office, then I struck gold! Now I have my driving licence at last!

DVLA did not say, but it was sent second class, which was confirmed by Royal Mail this morning.

I do understand about second class post, DVLA did not tell me it was sent second class, until RM confirmed it.

All been sorted, I have my new driving licence now. It was sent by second class from DVLA, they did not tell me that. They said, if it had not arrived by Friday (Yesterday), I should consider it lost. This morning, I took potluck and went to my local Royal Mail sorting office and managed to strike gold! I finally had it in my hand! Crisis over, its now ready for Monday to start an new and permanent job (I hope!).
