How can you tell when your pen has run out?

Are you using disposable pens or refillable? Because I don't use refillable ones, I can't really comment, but with the flexpens, surely you can see down the side where the plunger is? On mine at any rate, part of the side is both marked with decreasing units, and also clear so you can see the movement of the orange rubber plunger bit....

You wont be able to press the plunger any further when it runs out on both disposable and cartridge pens.
