Went for a pre aranged apt today for ecg and bloods.
Ecg no problem at all, then nurse decided to do the bloods 2 failed attempts later I suggested she asked one of the Drs to do it. That idea went down like a lead brick but she called one of the other nurses to have a go. This one cheerfully tells me she always manages to get blood from a vein on the back of peoples hand.
I said no thanks try once more on the arm then call it a day.
Nope the twit insisted it was back of the hand no choice. 😡
Talk about agony.
It felt like a red hot poker and left me shaking so I demanded she take it out. She kept saying but I've got a vein now whilst still poking the needle. So I told her with a raised voice to remove it. She was obviously deaf so I yanked it hard and pulled it out.. Talk about relief.
I then walked out of her room.
Can't think why but I haven't rebooked the bloods 😡

Sue that is awful. I really do feel sorry for you. Once when they had trouble getting blood out of me they suggested the hand.......I very politely told them where to go. I hope you are feeling ok now.

Oh dear.... sorry to hear about this fiasco Sue. Hope you get better treatment soon.

If my GP has trouble he uses a needle on a tube (bit like a venflon) which gets over the problem with the needles flapping around and causes the kind of problem you had. But is the nurse wont listen what can you do.

I'm so sorry to hear that happened to you. :( I hate blood tests at the best of times but that's just awful. I wonder if it's worth you putting in a complaint because there was no need for that behaviour... :/

Whenever I've had trouble having bloods taken (thankfully only twice ever in memory!), they changed to my other arm in the end or just helped me to calm down. On the arm change occasion, they chose to try out of my right arm first which I'm now very sure now is not as reliable as my left arm for taking blood. I was horrified by that experience when they had to stick the needle in me more than once. It's bad enough doing it once and I tell the nurse straight away that I've had bad experiences! ;_;

I hope you're okay in yourself. I truly do not blame you for walking out!

Thanks for the replies 🙂
Have to admit to feeling very upset over it still and have actually binned the forms as know I wont go back now.
After 47 years on insulin I have nver had problems with needles but am now feeling ill at the thought of them, nurse almost seemed vindictive. So sod her is my attitude.
Suspect I will have a phone call from my GP tomorrow after the nurse gets her side of the story in first 🙂 Just as well we are on first name terms :D

So sorry to hear that Sue, from what you've said her behaviour warrants an official complaint

Oh I agree Mike, but just don't want to rock the boat, so a quiet word in my GP's ear will pos be the best option. Then if I have to deal with her again there wont be any resentment if an oficial complaint was made.
On the whole the surgery and all the staff are fantastic as a rule I can't fault them.

"Not to happy" must be the master of under statement Sue, I am livid just reading this! the nurse's insensitivity beggars belief, as you say she must be deaf (or stupid).
I no longer let anyone, even the Doctor, take blood from my right arm as it is almost impossible, even on the outside just below the joint of my elbow, which I had to tolerate when I was in hospital. It's left arm or nothing now.
I would be very tempted to have a quiet word with your "on first name terms" Doctor friend and ask his opinion on the empathy and competence level of this nurse also what his confidence level is in her/him.
Just because she/he was obviously having a bad day there is no need for it to be taken out on you.

Oh Sue, what a nightmare!! :( Ouch!!!

Do you have a local hospital nearby? I'm just wondering if it's possible for you to get bloods done by a proper professional vampire / phlebotomist there, rather than be subject to that horrible nurse again? I mean at some point you will need bloods doing & I don't think I'd want that pair anywhere near me with even a pointy pen! 😱 I'm usually quite lucky when it's bloods, but then our surgery now has pros whose entire job is that, so they hit red gold every time.., 🙂

Sorry you had such an awful experience!

Hi Twitchy,
the local hospital is about 35 miles away so that's not an option. 1st nurse usually manages ok no problems. 2nd one was the problem for me due to her attitude. Once I feel better over it I will book an apt with my lovely GP to do the deed.
The bloods were urgent so a 6 month wait wont do any harm 😡
I look as if I have been run over by a road roller as so black and blue this morning.

poor you Sue! I would ensure that you stick with your other nurse that can take bloods properly in future!......it's like getting your hair cut...stick with who you know! 🙂

Oh Sue what a pain.

I have awful trouble having bloods taken despite there being a very good nurse & always have a "butterfly" needle in back of right-hand. Mind you last time they managed to get into a vien by my permanently bent right elbow (broke it when 12 falling out of a tree) & hey presto didn't even get a bruise. She noted where it was on my notes for next time.

They can't use my left arm as result of fluid build up after 2 lumpectomies/radiotherapy. I also have very small veins I found out when I took part in a small aspirin study the final time they needed to take bloods for their testing they had to call a doctor & ultra-sound my arm to find 1!!!!!!
The nurse had tried 4 times & another nurse also had a go.

At my surgery they always use childrens/small needles on me.

Take care hope it all gets sorted when you have a chance to speak to your GP.

i always suggest doing my right arm as its the one which works usually the only time i've ever had bloods took in my hand was when i was in hospital can't remember whether it was painful or not. but that is ridiculous, i would of flipped out just like you do, nurses should take into consideration what you say quite shocked to be honest.

Yeah, I've had both my wrists and both arms bruised to hell lately too,one of my wrists was swollen, I've still got the bruise a bit from 3 weeks ago, it's not cool is it.

I want it done at the hospital blood test department next time, they are really experienced and didn't hurt me at all.
