As per a previous post, 2 weeks ago my tooth cracked and I had mouth abscess. I didn't have dentist, had an emergency appointment, she said the tooth was rotten and would need to come out and gave me antibiotics. Couldnt take it out whilst swollen.

Had to call 7 dentists before I could get into one within 4 weeks. Went today.

She asked me about my diet, if I have lots of sugar, which I really don't, apart from hypos.

She also asked me how often I brush my teeth, which is twice a day. And i use mouthwash in the middle of the day.

I knew my mouth was in a bad way but I wasn't excepting this, I need 3 teeth out and 8 filings!!!

I really feel rotten, as apart from not going to the dentist for 5 years, I do look after them.

I feel like I have let myself down, could honestly cry.

Oh my goodness Phoebe, I'm so sorry to hear this :( I'm not surprised you feel rotten {{{HUGS}}}

I was in a very similar situation to you at a similar age - it's unfortunately easy to fall into until something happens that you can't ignore, and I'm sure there are lots of people here who can empathise with you. It will be hard, but when it's all done and out of the way you will feel so much better about things. I hope you can get this all sorted out soon.

(((Hugs))) I had to have 3 teeth out after having my twins, I was shocked too, my teeth have never been great despite my best efforts.

I've always looekd after them and had a good diet, even before the diabetes it was good. When I was diagnosed the dietitian couldn't believe how good my diet was for a teenager. My brother on the other hand was the opposite to me and his are fine! Look of the draw!

They've given me some fluoride toothpaste it's 5000ppm when standard stuff is like 1450. She said I need to brush 20 mins after any food, like I've not got enough to do.

Ah well. No rest for the wicked!

Plus it's one of the ones you can see when I talk. I'm not vain person, I've not been given much to work with, but my teeth always looked okay! :(

Oh bless ya love x sorry to hear this ... I myself hate the dentist so I completely empathise x hope it gets sorted really quickly x

Hi Phoebe - Teeth? Sorry youre having a rough time with yours hun - Mine began to deteriate just prior & since dx even though I have always looked after them & maintained regular 6 monthly checkups for years - one or two crowns here & there but i generally looked after my teeth well - so in the last 12 months unfortunately a few more have been extracted 😱 spoiling my smile too! So have a good cry Phoebe - get it out of your system then look forward to healthier & better looking teeth, take care hun - see you in Manchester come July 🙂

High BG levels make the body into a culture vat for bacteria..... Alas teeth suffer.... Sorry to hear about your tooth....

Sorry to hear about this I myself have had a few run ins with the dentist I have had a tooth almost taken out but they put a gold crown over it and have had loads of fillings probs my own fault though as I have a sweet tooth lol hope it gets better for you soon

Before you have such drastic treatment seek a second opinion. Not all dentists are the same.

At the grand age of 53 I have 4 fillings. All done originally in the 70s when dentists were filling happy! I had one replaced 10 years ago but the others are still going strong. I have semi erupted wisdom teeth that my dentist ( I changed to him as a child after my mother learnt that the dentist who did the fillings was filling happy) has wanted to just watch not remove unnecessarily. They cause me no problem and he says a good back up if I need any of my teeth removed as they will move to fill the gap!! Just had my annual check up and told all looking good. I have a crack in a back tooth that is stable and x rays show no decay so he will review again in 6 months - been this way for 4 years.

I was told years ago don't brush teeth till 30 minutes after food. Do not wet tooth brush before adding paste as it dilutes the paste. Don't over rinse mouth after brushing as leaving a bit of toothpaste in mouth and on teeth helps protect them.

My DD who is early twenties has zero fillings 🙂

Thanks Grogg2
I called 7 dentists in total that was the only one they had appointments free this month. The rest where 5 weeks away!

Hubby has added me to his dental plan through work, so I can claim the cost back which helps. I'm going to see if there's something they can do that is further up the treatment scale. Get all they can give me to keep them in as long as I can.

I knew the other two where broken but they haven't been causing issues.
I should have gone sooner I know.

But I just don't get it as I follow all the guidelines and eat a low sugar diet. I've never had sugary drinks, I like water and milk.

Blaming my genes again ha!

Thanks everyone xx

I am with Grog1, if you can, get a second opinion
My dentist is seen in a bad light by some of the islanders, because he wont use anesthetic where its not needed and so whatever discomfort you feel while he works is the only discomfort you feel, unlike those who numb it all up and go about their task with great gusto, and boy do you feel it afterwards! He will fight for every one of my rotten teeth even repairing cracks between roots when canal treatment down my twisted root systems cause them to puncture, most dentists would just pull the tooth at that point. And I can tell you pulling a tooth that has been worked on so much, normally results in lots of broken pieces and out with the single handed T-chisel. I think you will realise I have been through the wringer dentist-wise. I had several as an army brat and each blamed the last and replaced all of the previous dentist's fillings. The best dental fix ever was in Layone where a Marokan dentist simply super glued my bridge back in (it lasted 2 years) and cost 10euros the replacement eventually cost £1200 on the NHS and I was quoted £7000 private and £13000 for the preferred work by the private chap, who ended his quote with none of this work can be guaranteed to be successful... now you know why i went nhs.

so as I said, you might need more work but the teeth might be savable with a dentist willing to put the time in.

Good luck anyway.

Thanks Bill.

I need this one near the abscess out I know that, after seeing the xray. However this frontish one I would rather not lose, or at least want something there.

The only issue is none of the other places have appointments for over 4 weeks, so I dont know if I have time to wait.

This dental plan has made me feel better about it though means I dont have to think about the costs, cannot tell you what a relief that is.

Thank you all.

I might call a few on Monday see how I get on.

My brothers partner is from Hungary and he said the dentists over their are much cheaper, apparently they can take out and replace them all with those screw in things for only £3000 which is quite cheap really, maybe a trip to Budapest might be on the cards soon. xx

Hi Phoebe really sorry you are having problems with your teeth. It is so annoying when you are doing everything right (and you are) but are having problems. It is hard when we compare ourselves to others (such as your brother) because we often think why me? I keep trying to lose a little weight and yet have found it difficult even though I tended to eat fairly well (now on low carb diet). Yet other members of my family eat sugary things all the time and are not diabetic and do not put on weight!!!

I can totally understand why you would not want to lose one of your front teeth so I would go along with the others who have commented and say try to get another opinion.

Hope you get on well. Will be thinking of you
David

Have you tried Aloe Vera toothpaste available at Holland & Barrett? It's the only toothpaste I can use though I've never tried your one, is it prescription only?

I always wary of dentists who want to pull so many teeth Phoebe. And 8 fillings! I know dentists are in short supply but I'd be wanting a second opinion.
I saw a dentist many years ago who told me the same thing and I refused to go back. Another dentist said I only needed a filling! Teeth are precious and shouldn't be taken out unless absolutely and totally necessary.

Please tryto get a second opinion on what can be done for your front tooth. Good luck
