Not sure if my symptoms suggest diabetes

Hello all,

Sorry for asking here, but I didn't know where else to ask. I have been experiencing some symptoms and was just wondering if they are indicative of diabetes. I've had blood taken, waiting for results.

I suffer from vertigo roughly 3 or 4 times a week, particularly when eating. I have Terry's nails. My hair isn't growing as fast as it used to. I get pins and needles or numbness very quickly, particularly in my legs, hands and upper back. It's getting to the point where I can't sit still in one position or I feel like I'm about to get pins and needles. I can't read a book in bed for long without getting pins and needles.

I don't have any other symptoms, like needing the toilet a lot more (it feels like I need it a bit more than I used to, but I'm not sure if that's just in my mind). I suppose I'm just wondering if these symptoms together could suggest diabetes? It's hard to get any concrete info from web pages and I'm getting more worried as I wait for my results.

Could someone help, please?

Hi Sillow, welcome to the forum 🙂 It doesn't sound typical of diabetes. Some people do develop numbness or pins and needles, but this is usually in the hands or, particularly, the feet, and it tends to be constant rather than intermittent. Some people don't get the classic symptoms though, so it's very difficult to say. When do you get the results of your blood tests? Are there any particular reasons why you think it might be diabetes? Do you have any family history of it?

Hi there Sillow. I first went to my Dr with numbness/tingling in the whole of my legs. Not continuous but after walking it would sometimes come on to the extent I could not really walk without support for about 10 minutes. Then after a sit down I would be ok. When it first happened blood tests showed an under active thyroid and the problem seemed to go away. When it re-appeared about 3 years later another blood test showed diabetes. This has rapidly developed from oral medication to insulin injection over a 18 month period which some have suggested might indicate type 1.5 diabetes. Leg symptoms gone -but don't really remember when in the treatment cycle. Then again it might all be coincidence. Your blood results - if they were the usual full barrage of tests with half an armful of blood taken - should hopefully put you on the right track. I am 68 and atypical - but then so is everyone who is diabetic as it is so personal to everyone.

Hi Sillow, welcome. I also used to get tingling/numbness, particularly in my arms when lying in bed but also in my legs if sitting still for any length of time.

I suspect that for me it might have been a weight problem rather than my diabetes, although in my case the two are closely linked. Since losing shedloads of surplus fat, the numbness has gone and my blood sugar is back in normal range. It's impossible for me to say whether the numbness was caused by the high sugar, or whether both the numbness and sugar were consequences of the weight issue.

I hope the blood results give you some answers and that it turns out to be something that's easy to treat. 🙂
