hi all.Joined a while ago but due to health issues dont think I managed to post yet
I have been diabetic for many years initially on metformin but had such awful side effects so i went low carb and at times keto which helped my glucose levels for many many years without any medication
But for some many months now my levels keep climbing to the point that before bed I'm reading around 13 and sometimes more
My diet hasn't drastically changed but I do now have to take asthma medication and also turned menopause..so not sure if that's what has triggered this
I went reluctantly back on Metformin but in the form of Sukkarto which caused less stomach upset but still gives me severe nausea and also doesn't seem to have made any difference to my glucose 2 months later !
The diabetic nurse has now asked me to add sitagliptin 100mg once a day but i am very worried about more side effects as have to cope with so much already
I'm housebound due to other chronic issues and cannot exercise at all. But despite this the low carbing helped me for such a long long time I'm a bit gutted that it doesn't seem to be helping me anymore :(
Anyone have any experience of using sitagliptin ? or of their low carbing suddenly being less effective ? Thank you

I think sitagliptin is a good one for side effects, I don’t remember getting any (though it’s a long time since I used it) or seeing anyone complain of side effects. It’s not like metformin where many people get them. Of course read the patient leaflet then you know what to look out for.

Hello again @Bambi

Sorry to hear your glucose levels have been creeping upwards. This can happen with some people’s diabetes, where strategies and tactics that have been very successful in managing glucose levels for a while gradually become less effective as a person’s metabolism changes, or their diabetes moves into a different phase.

Many people on the forum have found they need to revisit their techniques at intervals, either to ensure that they are still on-track and changes haven’t snuck in, or because they need a slight change or the support of a medication or dose adjustment.

There’s some information about sitagliptin here which may be helpful

Including a link to information about side effects - the most common of which seems to be headaches.

Hope you get on well with it, and it helps you with your diabetes management 🙂

I have been on Sitagliptin or Aliogliptin (same family), for years I find it suits me well.

I’ve been on Sitagliptin for over twelve months now and not had a single side effect.

I was recently offered the option of swapping to Metformin. Not on your life was my response.

I took myself off sitagliptin many years ago, nausea and a need to use loperamide (Immodium) every other day. I do seem to have been unlucky as I have not seen anyone else on here reporting these side-effects.

Certainly worth giving it a try!

Hello everyone
and thank you for your replies..and the link @everydayupsanddowns
It does help to hear from others.
I am not very good with taking new meds at all..Very reluctant as already on an long list of medications for other things and some cause side effects or have to be carefully spaced away from some of the others
But it does look like I have no choice as been spending a fair bit out on low carb and keto products and it doesn't seem to be helping anymore so looks like sitagliptin has to be my go to for now
But the warnings about pancreatitis is worrying me quite a bit as i already have stomach issues so may not know the difference !

Let us know how you get on with it @Bambi 🙂
