Hey folks my husband who has been dx a few years but not on medication has been to gp today to be told he needs to start the metformin as his latest test showed a result of 51 (6.8) they want him to take 1x 500mg and raise it to 4x 500mg by end of month 😱 i thought that was a bit extreme ....what do you think?

Well, I'm not a doctor, but I would have thought that a longer period on the lower dose might be more appropriate - many people with only slightly elevated levels manage on low dose metformin.

I don't know why a doctor would make a long-range prediction of dose requirements - how on earth can they know what he'll need?!!! Hopefully starting on the metformin, especially if combined with careful diet, should bring some improvement in his Hba1c, but is he going to have this re-measured in a month's time?

Thanks what I thought ! When I was fist dx I was on those sort of levels and within 3months my nurse saw me and cos I looked so awful booked me an appointment with gp and he reduced it down to 1!

Saw my nurse and she said there is evidence that having the full dose of metformin early on greatly decreases the risks of cardiac arrest ...however she suggested that the inrease could be too fast so suggested he does it slowly ie up to 2x500mg in 3 months and then ablood test to check the levels again ....but shhhhhh dont tell the GP

So hetook 1st one last night and had terrible tummy ....wow didnt think the megafartin worked that quickly 😱

Perhaps he's extra sensitive - I hope things settle for him just as quickly 🙂
