My mother was taken to hospital today due to a medical reason. However, whilst I was there I wasn't able to eat/drink anything. After about 4.5hrs I began to feel hot; lightheaded; and really faint... I ended up sitting on the floor feeling the blood rush from my head and turned an ashen colour. My sugars were taken and it was 7.8; nurse gave me a cup of tea and a sandwich (egg but unfortunately on white bread; only ate half). Soon felt better. Could this be due to lack of food/dehydration.....

My mom has been kept in overnight; she is in the best hands and will hopefully be out soon.

Amanda x 🙂

Sorry about your Mum Amanda, as you say, she is in the best hands.

Re your "shakes" as I call them, I have felt these symptoms for several years, and often thought it was sugar related. Always found eating a sandwich was the best way to get back to normal. Dr said it was because we need to eat every 4 hours or so, dont know the truth of that. Very unpleasant though so hope you feel back to normal and the white bread didn't cause a problem.

Sorry to hear your feeling so ill.

It could be lack of food/ dehydration. It could also be anxiety. It sounds like the food and drink the nurse gave you helped so the food theory seems most likely. If it happens again or you are worried talk it over with your Dr.

Hope that you Mum is soon on the mend.

I agree with margie, I do hope you and your mum feel better soon. Take care Sheena

Hi Amanda. Sorry to hear that your mum's not well. Hope she gets well very soon. I often feel weird if I leave more than a four hour gap between snacks/meals which is why I usually have a piece of fruit mid morning. I think that, combined with your mum's hospitalisation may well be the reason for your 'wobble' Also, you did say you weren't 100% over the weekend, so maybe combined....? Loads of love and hugs to you and hope your mum is out of hospital and back on her feet soon.xxxx((((((()))))))Katie

I'm sorry to hear about your mum, I hope she is better soon.

Possible reasons for feeling as you did, lack of food or dehydration or stress or a combination of all three. How are you feeling now? I hope you are feeling better and it was just a one off.

Amanda

Sorry to to hear about your nasty turn and your Mum's need to be in hospital. 7.8mmol/l isn't hypoglycaemic, but feels like it when your body has been used to higher levels. When feeling faint / light headed, the key action is to get your head lower, either by lying down or putting your head between your kees when sitting. As other s have said, it's likely to be a combination of hunger / thirst / dehydration / stress.

By chance, I had to drive a lodger to the emergency GP on Thursday night - she bashed on our bedroom door at 2330, having not mentioned her tooth pain all evening. As I was the only person (of 3 in the house) with both a driving licence and insurance, I had to take her. But not before filling a flask and water bottle and checking my muesli bar supply in my rucksack. As always, there was food and drink in my car. Finally got back to bed at 0100, and hadn't needed to eat or drink, but it is important to be prepared. The lodger didn't take her wallet, so needed me to pay for her prescription, and as the clinic card machine wasn't working, it was very fortunate that I had just enough cash to pay for her prescription.

Wow, you're uber organised!!! very impressed...I'd have probably thought of a couple of those things, but not all of them!!

Hi Amanda

I think everyone else has covered the possibilities and would imagine it is the lack of food, dehydration and worry all combined.

I hope your mum and you are doing much better today. Sending you best wishes 🙂

Sorry to hear your mum is in hospital. Hope she will be better soon.

I totally agree with imtrying. Stress and no food does all sorts...
I know of a non-diabetic who fainted in the street with a hypo, because she'd not eaten breakfast.

Thanks guys; my mother was released from Birmingham QE this afternoon (staff were brilliant)- they thought it was her heart but is a viral infection. Poor dear, collapsed in the street...:(

I think my "turn" was due to lack of food/drink but also I was very anxious for my mom; its not nice seeing someone you love wired up with tubes hanging out everywhere. I also had to have an ECG this morning so was worried about that is well....:(

It's a stressful week; I've also got my first retinal examination tomorrow and dentist Thursday (2 fillings).

There is a plus side.....I have my 2nd swimming lesson on Thursday....😱

Hi Amanda

Glad to hear your mum is ok. That must be a relief for you. Good look with the eye exam tomorrow and the fillings at the dentist! Horrible places, dentists (see pm:()! Enjoy the swimming though!! Love Katiexx

Very pleased to hear that your Mum is OK Amanda 🙂 Don't worry about the other things, just stay focused on your swimming lesson! 🙂

Hi Amanda,

Pleased to hear your mum has been allowed home. I do hope that the rest of your week improves, take care,

Shirl

Hope you (and mum) feel better soon ((((((((((())))))))
I also get the shakes and get hot and sweaty when having a hypo and was convinced I was having one this afternoon while teaching a lively yr3 class! Checked my bloods and I was 6.3. I treated it as a hypo. I'm sure the stress of the situation and lack of food would have added to you feeling poorly. x
