Hello,
I'm not new to the forums but haven't been on for a long while. I was originally diagnosed 3-4 years ago as type 2 but at the end of October I had gastroenteritis and a week later ended up in hospital with DKA. The doctors have said that I am actually a type 1 & half and now have insulin 4 times a day. It's been a steep learning curve and the diabetes specialist nurse at the hospital says that I am the first person she has met in 20 years to go from type 2 to type 1.

I have not felt as well as I do now for a long time so I am kinda glad that is has happened if you can be glad to get ill?!

Any advice anyone can offer to a new type 1 would be gratefully received.

Hope you all had a happy Christmas

Claire. X

Hi Claire, welcome back! And as a different type! There are quite a few members who have been misdiagnosed as you have been, unfortunately, and it has taken something very serious in order for them to get diagnosed properly and get the appropriate treatment. Perhaps your DSN should read some of the stories on here and realise it's not as uncommon as you might think! I think that assumptions are often made about factors like age , weight etc. and so the tests that would show whether Type 1 or 2 are not undertaken. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't had DKA at diagnosis (aged 49) I would have been misdiagnosed.

I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas - it's the best reference and guide to Type 1 available 🙂 Please ask any questions you may have - a lot of things will be new to you now and there are lots of friendly, experienced people here who will do their best to help you out. What insulin are you on? Do you know what your last HbA1c was? Have you been taught about carb counting so you can adjust your insulin doses to match your carb intake?

Looking frward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hear Hear - Claire - you never WERE T2 ! You were just misdiagnosed all along.

T1 is pretty much all about carbs and insulin and you do need to go on a carb-counting course ASAP.

The Ragnar Hanas book is a good un.

Welcome to the forum Claire 🙂
