Hi all,

My name's Caz, I'm 26 and live in wales. I had bloods done before christmas and it came back that my blood glucose was high - GP wasn't overly concerned and said he'd give me some info on my diet. Had some bloods done last week for something completely unrelated and as of today people are throwing the word diabetes at me. It's slightly scary as I've been having hypos quite frequently for the last few weeks - had them occasionally all my life but never thought they were important and never told anyone til my support worker commented on my shaking when I was having one today, now I'm starting to wonder. Been suffering with needing the loo (but not at night?) and being overly thirsty with very dry mouth for the same period of time. I'm also really rather over-weight. Is it possible it's all coincidence? I'm going for fasting tests tomorrow, but haven't actually seen a doctor yet. Basically, I know nothing for definite, but not knowing is worse than being told it is. I've already got other physical conditions and the thought of another, well... :( Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm just anxious and out of my depth.

Thanks in advance for replies 🙂

Hi Caz, welcome to the forum 🙂 If you are having hypos I'm wondering if it is reactive hypoglycaemia rather than diabetes. This is where your pancreas overproduces insulin in reaction to certain foods or situations. People who are not diabetic can suffer from low blood sugar, but with diabetes it usually only happens when you are injecting insulin and have injected too much, or if you are on insulin-promoting medications.

Please ask any uestions you may have, we will do our best to help! 🙂

Warm welcome! 🙂

Have a browse through the forum. I am sure you will find it (and us!) supportive.

Take care

Welcome to the forum. I know what you mean about that period of time when you know it is a possibility but it hasn't been said as definite.

What do you reckon? In my heart of hearts, I knew and when I read up on the symptoms, things fell into place so the final confirmation did not come as a surprise.

Still learning and this forum is wonderful as you really can ask any question and someone will always answer without calling you an idiot!

Let us know how you go on.

hi Caz welcome ...i love Wales x try not to worry ...have a good look around here and no question is regarded silly x good luck🙂

Hi northerner, thanks for the welcome and the quick reply :D

The hypos are odd and I only mentioned them as I knew vaguely that they can be related to diabetes - I'd research it more but I'm in the state of mind where knowing as little as possible is probably a mentally safer place than overloading with information right now! As it is I've found I've got more risk factors than I thought. The hypo I had today was following exercise - I can see where that one comes from 🙂 - but I get them at odd times too regardless of whether/what I've eaten. Hopefully they've got nothing at all to do with anything in particular, although, even if it comes back I don't have D I should probably mention them to someone in the medical profession 😱

Is it normal to have a high blood glucose come back and people to automatically start saying diabetes? I thought you'd need a bit more than one test before you start worrying people? I should point out I was told by a nurse not a doctor - she called at the house with the forms to have fasting bloods done at our local hospital in the morning. Never had that happen before so that's probably added to my anxiety a bit. There is both some type 1 (generations ago mind) and some current type 2 in the family but my mother always refers to it as late-onset? My grandmother was diagnosed in her early 70s I think and maintains to this day she doesn't actually have diabetes nor does she seem to do anything to control it and yet her blood sugar is always fine...

I'm not a worrier by nature, as a family of 3 we've all got at least one condition that requires regular medication etc, but I think that going from thinking everything was fine at 1pm to being told they think I have diabetes by 3 has thrown me a bit.

Take care and thanks again,

Caz

Woah, you guys are quick, lol!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome - I'm hoping I'm not going to need to use the forum much after the next few days, but to answer your question MargB, having done a little reading today (veeeeeeeeeeeeery basic) I do think the possibility is there.

As I said - it's the not knowing that's the killer and I'm going to be left waiting for test results over the weekend, argh! Nothing is ever straight-forward in our household 😉

Thanks again, this seems like a really friendly place :D
