Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
Hi everyone.

I've not been here for quite some time. I pretty much had my diabetes under control having been diagnosed back in 2016, and a lot of people on here were great with their help and advice.

Late January of this year I was re-diagnosed with Type 1.5 LADA! I had switched meds after a turbulent relationship with metformin and keeping my HbA1C levels at around 50 (I got it down to 42/43 at one point in early stages) and couldn't seem to get it down anymore than that. I started on Gliclazide and even on full dose, my BG levels were really high and the HbA1C went up. My diabetes nurse has been brilliant and referred me to a specialist.

I am now on NovoMix mix 30 (started treatment last week) and I can't believe the difference it's already making. Of course, I am now re-educating myself with diet and treatment, but everything is going OK so far. I'm taking two injections a day to start with, but I may go to four in the future as it seems a more flexible approach.

If anyone has any advice on this, then please do let me know.

Hope everyone is doing OK on their diabetic journeys.

Mmmmmmm - Novomix is a very old-fashioned insulin a mix of 'intermediate acting' and 'fast acting' insulins - 70% of the former and guess what? - 30% of the latter. If I were you, I think you'd be well advised to make sure to test before and after eating and see if it brings your BG back to earth soon enough. Immediately before, and 2 hours after. If it isn't back to pre-meal or thereabouts within that 2 hours - how long does it actually take to do it?

If it does it OK well, fine. If not - different types of insulin (ie same as T1s use by and large) are easily available, but being 1.5 you'd most likely need the hospital, at least DSN if not the actual consultant him/herself to recommend.

Hope you get on OK, anyway.

Glad to hear it’s going well.

Welcome back @AngelaY9847

Goodness! What a lot has changed since you were here last.

Glad the insulin is working well for you, but I agree with you that 4x a day will be much more adaptable and flexible. With mixed insulins, once it’s ‘in’ you are committed to feeding the insulin the expected amount of carbs at the times it needs them - whether that’s convenient or not!

On 4x a day (multiple daily injections / MDI / basal:bolus) you can eat meals of different sizes, at different times, or miss them entirely!

Plus you’d only have to snack if you actually wanted to 🙂
