Not a good start

Hi my name is Christina (Chris)and am newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After 2 lots of blood tests I received my diagnosis on the 1st of July, but due to Covid everything was done by phone I was told to watch my diet and loose weight and more or less left to my own devices yesterday I was taken into hospital due to having a hypo episode and falling onto my hip. This was because I'd had no follow up and all the recipe books I have purchased give different information.I sm now chasing up the doctor again to get an appointment with a dietitian and then hopefully a diabetic nurse.
I would also like to say Thank you for accepting me to the group hopefully I will be able to move on with all the support you guys give

Welcome @Christina 54 🙂 Yes, Covid is making things harder. You’re not alone in feeling ‘left to your own devices’. Are you on any medication for the diabetes? I’m wondering what caused your hypo.

I hope your hip is ok now.

I trust you are home now and not too sore after your fall .

Have you been prescribed medication for diabetes, the reason I ask is that I am wondering about the hypo (low blood glucose) too.
Could it be that you haven’t been eating enough.
Mostly T2s unles on meds that can cause low blood glucose have hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose/ hyper)

What changes have you made to your diet .
Many of us on here find that by reducing carbohydrates esp the starchy ones and so long as you don’t have a medical condition that requires a low fat diet , eating a normal amount of good fats, not only lowers our blood glucose but can help in wright loss.

It has been difficult to get proper appointments because of Covid , but that doesn’t mean you should have been left high and dry esp as you are newly diagnosed.
Still you have come to the right place for info and support about diabetes from people who live with the condition.
So ask all the questions you need to ok, we’ll do our best to help based on what has worked for us

I was told to eat a low fat diet as my doctor said in her words "I don't want to go down the meds route till we need to". After the fall I called her again and she told me to keep talking my blood pressure twice a week, she gave me bo further advice

It seems a bit odd that you had a 'hypo' incident if you are not on any medication so wonder if the cause was something else. Maybe low blood pressure or even high blood glucose. Did they test your blood glucose when the incident occurred?
However the main message in managing blood glucose levels is that it is carbohydrates that you need to be careful of so reducing your intake of foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, cereals and some fruits as they are all high carb foods. That could be either cutting some things out or reducing portions, swapping to the brown/wholewheat versions make little difference. Basing your meals on proteins, so meat, fish, eggs, cheese dairy and veg ad salads is a good start. Opting for full fat versions as they have less carbs than low fat.
Were you told what your HbA1C was when you were given your diagnosis, if not you should ask for it as it gives a starting point to know how much you need to do and also helps people to make appropriate suggestions.
If you give examples of your daily menu then people can give you some ideas for good swaps.

Cutting down on fats is just the reverse of what most Type 2 diabetics need. It is the Carbohydrates that we need to limit, not the (traditional) fats.
I blame decades of being frightened into eating Low Fat for causing my weight gain (its Carbs that make us fat rather than eating fat), my tripple bypass (a high Carb diet causes inflammation which makes places for arteries to clog up), and then my Type 2 diabetes (carbs, starches as well as sugars, turn into glucose very quickly and also often leave you feeling hungry).

Hope you are recovering OK after your fall - must have been very frightening for you

Whether it was low blood pressure, or low blood glucose that caused your wobble, I hope the forum can support you in making some positive changes that will help to make you feel a whole lot better.
